WHO WE ARE

Since 1963, A Better Chance has been the only national organization of its kind, working to increase substantially the number of well-educated young people of color who are capable of assuming positions of responsibility and leadership in American society.

Through our signature College Preparatory Schools Program (CPSP), highly-motivated students of color are recruited for placement in over 300 outstanding independent and public schools across the country. Students who are accepted to and enroll in our Member Schools become A Better Chance Scholars.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

A Better Chance is in a transformational moment in its history when it is looking to take programmatic offerings to the next level. The Scholar and Alumni Success Manager will oversee the Scholar and Alumni Success Team that ensures all A Better Chance Scholars and Alumni are prepared to succeed after graduation from their member school and remain connected to the A Better Chance organization. The position reports to the National Director of Programs and is a full-time position based in New York City. The start date for this position is Monday, January 4, 2021.

Job duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

External Relationship Management

  • Manage relationships with A Better Chance corporate career partners
  • Oversee the management of relationships with A Better Chance summer opportunities partners
  • Oversee the management of relationships with A Better Chance college affiliates

Staff Management

  • Oversee the Associate Program Manager (APM) College and Career as they develop a codified program of post-secondary workshops and events.
  • Oversee the Associate Program Manager (APM), Parents and Alumni as they develop and implement a codified program model for A Better Chance parents and alumni

Scholar Support & Management

  • Serve as the key A Better Chance staff member is addressing high-level/important Scholar and parent issues
  • Ensure relevant and accurate Scholar and parent data is collected to inform programming across the organization
  • Oversee the selection and management of the Cornerstone Leadership Council

Events

  • Oversee the APM, College and Career in the execution of the Morgan Stanley Career and Workforce Skills Series in partnership with Morgan Stanley
  • Oversee the APM, College and Career in the execution of A Better Chance Career Day
  • Oversee the APM, College and Career as they develop and host new events throughout the year
  • Oversee the APM, Parent & Alumni Programming in the development and execution of Parents as Partners and other parent events
  • Oversee the APM, Parent & Alumni Programming in the development and execution of Alumni events

General Organizational Support

  • Participate in reading A Better Chance applications
  • Participate in Interview Day, Summer Leadership Academy, New Scholar Orientation, and Member School Fair days as needed.
  • Coordinate with the Preparation and Success Team to ensure programmatic alignment
  • Coordinate with the Development Team to communicate events relevant to their work
  • Provide relevant data to teams and departments across the organization
  • Attend and support key development events

YOU NEED TO LOVE

  • Managing a team of people and helping them understand how they are part of a larger team that MUST work together
  • Collaborating on iterative core programming development
  • Working on a team that must be highly communicative and help one another out
  • Translating a larger organizational vision into programming for Scholars, parents, and alumni
  • Creating programming that helps students prepare for and succeed in post-secondary environments
  • Building and maintaining relationships with people both across the organization and external to the organization
  • Collecting and leveraging data to drive and inform programming

IMPORTANT SKILLS/EXPERIENCES

  • Experiences creating programming that addresses students’ post-secondary and/or career needs
  • Experiences working on a team that MUST work closely together to get things done and ensure programmatic alignment.
  • Experiences building and maintaining partnerships with external program partners and stakeholders
  • Experiences working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment that at times requires you to respond to unexpected, high-level requests with little notice
