The Nature of the Job

The Managing Director will report to and work in close partnership with the CEO, building and leading the Citizen University team. S/he will manage and cultivate staff, programs, partnerships, and new initiatives day-to-day. Experience in finance, budgeting, and project management are essential. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional verbal and written communication skills and cross-cultural competency.

Core Responsibilities

Financial Management and Oversight

● Develop and manage organizational budgets

● Oversee staff and consultants in the billing and accounting process

● Work with CEO and senior staff on grant administration and reporting

Project Development and Management

● Help develop and execute organizational strategy and priorities

● Represent CEO and organization in fundraising and ally-building contexts

● Develop processes/systems for efficient, coordinated, and successful workflows

● Oversee strategic marketing and communications planning and execution

HR and Team Development

● Manage staff to ensure effective coordination of programs and projects 

● Provide effective and inspiring operational leadership and support for staff

● Oversight of recruitment, hiring, compensation and performance management

● Benefits administration and oversight

● Employee onboarding and professional development


● Ensure ongoing maintenance and updating of information systems/infrastructure

● Upgrade and implement appropriate policies, internal controls, and procedures

● Manage required organizational reporting

● Keep CEO informed of all critical issues

Required Skills and Attributes

● 8+ years of management experience in non-profit and/or public sector

● Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills with experience leading diverse work

team and partnering with a CEO

● Experience in scaling teams and organizations

● Demonstrated success in building partnerships across organizations

● Knowledge of the civic leadership, education, and engagement landscape

● Initiative and deep experience in operational execution

● Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, set priorities, and adhere to timelines in

a fluid environment

● Values of service, mutuality, and responsibility to a greater good

● Critical and creative thinking

● Commitment to learning and continuous improvement
