Position: Education Specialist

Department: Legacy Network

Reports to: Assistant Director

Hours: 21 hours/week - 12 weeks (late Spring and Summer programming)

Position Summary:

The goal of the Beginning with Children Legacy Network is to equip high school and college students who live or attend school in Brooklyn with the necessary tools to succeed in advanced educational settings and a rapidly changing world. The program provides a range of supports for middle, high school and college students, from academic tutoring and high school selection strategies to goal assessment and social emotional development workshops. High school students receive assistance with all elements of the college application process: SAT preparation, financial aid, college visits and interview techniques. 

The Education Specialist will be responsible for the design and facilitation (in person and virtual), as well as one-on-one mentorship and guidance for students in 8th -10th grade.  The programs for these participants will run from late Spring 2021 through this summer.  There may be opportunities to extend work through the next school year if funding permits.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Master’s degree in an education related field.   (Minimum of Bachelor’s degree)
• Five years experience in creating and facilitating educational workshops in schools, after school programs, or community based organizations.
• At least three years’ teaching/youth facilitation experience, including experience in program design, lesson planning and implementation of structured programming for middle and/or high school aged students
• Strong verbal, written, clerical, organizational, and problem solving skills.
• Demonstrated ability to perform multiple tasks effectively in a fast-paced, challenging, and constantly changing environment.
• The ability to perform at a high level.
• Dedication to serving youth in an urban setting. Innovation and patience.
• Demonstrated understanding of the challenges facing youth in an urban setting.

DUTIES

• Design, facilitate, and administer an advising/workshop series focused on youth development, high school transition and good citizenship for students in the 8-10th grade while working together with the Legacy Network team to ensure overall student success.  The workshop sessions will be held afterschool or Saturdays and the summer sessions will take place during the weekdays this summer.
• Plan and chaperone enrichment trips as the city begins to open back up with support of Legacy Network team (virtual and in person).
• Work with team to ensure quality implementation of academic enrichment, social/cultural and youth development programming for all participants. Work cooperatively with all staff, community based organizations, students, and parents.
• Work with Assistant Director to support implementation of all related programs.  (Summer Internships, enrichment experiences, field trips) 
• Attend program meetings and professional development workshops as coordinated by program leadership.
•  Log all student/family contacts and attendance  in Google drive.
