Since 1999, the Microenterprise Project of Volunteers of Legal Service (VOLS), has provided pro bono legal assistance to low-income entrepreneurs and business owners in New York City and help address unmet civil legal and technical assistance needs. Low-income micro-entrepreneurs, typically immigrants, women, and people of color, often rely on small business ownership as a strategy for climbing out of poverty. The Project provides business and transactional legal services by recruiting and supporting a network of volunteer attorneys from top law firms in New York. Volunteers counsel clients on a variety of legal issues, including contracts, commercial leases, intellectual property, and employment law. VOLS works closely with community-based partner organizations to identify small businesses and entrepreneurs in need of pro bono legal assistance. The Project also recruits and supports volunteer attorneys to conduct workshops and produce educational materials on legal topics relevant to small business owners.
The VISTA will be involved in helping to expand and fortify the Project’s network of partners, including law firm and community partners. This will include enhancing volunteer resources, recruiting volunteers, improving volunteer management practices, outreach to community organizations, improving data collection and evaluation, facilitating volunteer placement and matching pro bono opportunities, and creating a recognition program.
