The Marketing and Communications Director will be the chief architect of the Challenge Success brand and marketing strategy. He/she will help identify key organizational growth opportunities and accelerate our model from serving 300 to 2000+ schools by 2022, as well as support the overall strategic direction of the organization. This is a full-time, senior leadership position reporting to the Executive Director.


  • Develop and lead a strategic marketing plan and vision that encompasses content, social media & digital, public relations, communications, and partnerships.
  • Build and evolve foundational marketing tools and documents to support teams across the organization, such as messaging strategy documents, personas, and playbooks.
  • Drive demand by testing strategies (in-market tests, as well as market research) that work for Challenge Success’s unique target constituents. This may include developing partnerships, planning events, building online awareness, and other creative tactics.
  • Create repeatable processes for measuring marketing metrics in acquisition and engagement to ensure growth and expansion goals are achieved.
  • Collaborate with the Program teams to identify new offerings to schools and other stakeholders, and launch new services to clients.
  • Support leadership by ghost-writing content, collateral, and presentations to expand Challenge Success’s thought leadership.
  • Manage website, social media, and email marketing channels to drive awareness. Evaluate current success of each channel, identify priorities for improvement, and pursue strategy and implementation changes.
  • Ensure public relations efforts focus on amplifying the mission through placements in print, broadcast, and online media, as well as speaking engagements and conferences. Oversee traditional communications and media relations efforts, as well as leverage new key influencers, outreach, and engagement opportunities.
  • In collaboration with Executive Director, partner with development associate to identify and support marketing outreach strategies for fundraising activities and development growth.

An ideal candidate demonstrates many of the following: 

  • 10 years + professional experience in product or service marketing. Prior Business to Business (B2B) experience and/or marketing to nonprofits or schools is a plus. 
  • Experience in a small entrepreneurial growth culture, including startups and/or innovative social impact enterprises.
  • An understanding of the education sector in the U.S., ideally with connections in the sector, and/or a significant experience within the public and/or private school landscape.
  • Demonstrated track record of brand and product marketing strategy fundamentals:
  • Developing or evolving a brand, creating a voice, and developing inspirational marketing.
  • Building a client/user base through market testing and growth marketing strategies for prospects and existing customers.
  • Designing marketing strategy for vertical markets or target segments.
  • Developing wide-ranging marketing strategies and instituting marketing processes to drive efficiency.
  • Managing across multiple internal stakeholders to implement marketing strategy and tactics.
  • Developing partnerships to expand awareness and drive demand.
  • Experience and a willingness to be a hands-on marketer, including:
  • Creating and executing on content plans across email, blogs, white papers, videos, media, and/or new media.
  • Writing all types of supporting content; must be a strong writer.
  • Working with colleagues to create and edit content.
  • Recruiting and working with service vendors in the past, such as website design firms and graphic designers.
  • Interviewing prospects, or groups of prospects, for market research.

Salary & Benefits:

Commensurate with experience, and at or above the 75th percentile of compensation as compared to Northern California Fair Pay for Non-Profits.
