The Associate Director of Communications: Strategy and Campaigns will support the development of and help execute integrated, strategic communication plans for NILC and the NILC Immigrant Justice Fund, our c4 organization. Working with campaign and program staff, the Associate Director will weave our vision into compelling, multi-channel communications that tell our story, move people to action, and help us achieve our mission. The Associate Director will ensure collaboration with colleagues on the media/messaging and digital/publications teams so that activities for the department are aligned across NILC’s diverse campaigns and priority areas.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Strategy: Develop short- and long-term strategic communication plans to advance key campaign priorities that maximize and build upon our digital and traditional media operations. Advise and prep senior leaders on public engagement, speaking, and media opportunities. Monitor current events and track social and political trends in order to make timely recommendations regarding communication strategies and activities. Serve as a bridge between the multiple campaigns for enhanced coordination, collaboration and leveraging of communication resources.
- Execution: Work with campaign staff and communications colleagues to define and execute on strategies that will drive impact through communication opportunities in various media. Establish and maintain procedures and processes to ensure that activities are carried out consistently, efficiently, and in accordance with brand standards. Support the production of communication outputs that are consistent with NILC and the IJF’s voice, tone and style, including drafting, editing and disseminating: Speeches and presentations, Briefing memos, Messaging guides and talking points, Op-eds, Press releases, Web and social media copy, Podcasts and other digital media, Blogs, articles and other publications. Collaborate across the Communication team to ensure alignment across activities and campaigns. Identify and mobilize resources needed to ensure successful and timely execution of plans, including leveraging resources, consultants and staff across campaigns
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Communications, Marketing, or related field, or equivalent work experience required;
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Political and/or advocacy campaign experience.
- Experience working for an elected official and/or in a political environment is preferred
- 7-9 years of experience, with proven track record in strategic communication planning, execution, and measurement.
- Expert skills in communications, media relations, writing, messaging and brand management.
- Experience working in a fast-paced, complex environment.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, along with very strong organizational and project management ability.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while prioritizing high-impact work.
- Experience managing high-pressure situations, and working in ambiguity to define a clear path.
- Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and conflict resolution skills: ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- We are currently working remotely and travel is restricted due to COVID-19. The work environment is generally quiet, and in an office setting. Under normal conditions, up to 10% of overnight interstate travel may be required, generally to NILC’s Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles offices, or another location within the U.S for 3-5 nights at a time.
