The Deputy Director is a highly visible management position that assists the Executive Director with the development and execution of operational policies for the organization. The role oversees a great deal of internal matters, freeing up the Executive Director to focus on external matters. Work to secure financial support for the NGO, write grants, run pay-for-service programs, and organize fundraisers. The Deputy Director is a highly visible management position that assists the Executive Director with the development and execution of operational policies for the organization. The Deputy Director supervises the program manager, development manager, and communications manager, and ensures the organization's programmatic work is carried out in a manner consistent with BCAction’s Theory of Change and Strategic plan. The Deputy Director works with the Development Director to ensure that key staff are integrated into development efforts including fundraising opportunities and stewardship strategies. The Deputy Director serves as a secondary liaison to the BCAction Board of Directors and assists in board communications and activities. The Deputy Director serves as the organization’s CEO in the absence of the Executive Director.


 The Deputy Director will oversee 3 core areas: Development and Grant Management, 2) Operations, Admin, Compliance, and 3) Programs and Government Affairs. The position focus allocation is listed below.


Core Area(s) of Focus:

●     Development and Grants (55%)--Sr. Development and Finance

○     Development and database management, grant management (search, proposal writing, reports, and relationships), fundraising, donor outreach and donor management, budget management and revenue management

●     Operations, Administration, and Compliance (25%)-- Sr. Operations

○     Contracts, partnerships, QA/QC, risk management, financials, HR and personnel, strategic leadership

●     Programs and Government Affairs (20%)--Sr. Program, Policy and Research

○     Government affairs and scientific strategy, policy, campaigns, partnerships, coalition work, project/program strategy and support, research, blog/OpEd writing, speaking, legislative support, liaison, conference attendance, etc.

 

Role Description


Development and Grant Management (55%)--Sr. Development

Duties include: organizing large-scale fundraising initiatives, working with board members, identifying and writing grants, managing the annual fund, building relationships with major gift donors together with the Executive Director, identifying and cultivating relationships with prospective major gift donors, and growing small donors. A Director should have at least five years of experience and a proven track record of successful grant writing, cultivating funds, and diversifying a fundraising portfolio. Experience should be mainly in fundraising, marketing strategies, grant writing and event planning. Leadership experience is especially useful for supervising fundraising employees. A Director is responsible for raising enough money to meet their organization’s financial goals, forecasting future income and gathering feedback from donors. As our Deputy Director you are responsible for all of our vital revenue streams, which allow us to achieve our mission and maximize our impact in the community. You plan and organize fundraising activities, manage the development budget and assemble team members to raise the heck outta those funds.


As our designer of development strategies, you get to

●     Help our donors accomplish their philanthropic goals and ambitions through a relationship with our organization

●     Oversee the development and execution of the annual fundraising plan with the goal of raising $x annually

●     Generate new ideas that increase revenue and donor loyalty

●     Report on program progress to senior management and the board

●     Oversee the development budget and monitor expenses

As our organizer of development activities, you get to

●     Maintain long-term relationships with existing donors

●     Identify and build relationships with new and prospective donors

●     Oversee systems and software to track and cultivate donors and prospects, including our donor database and wealth screening tools

●     Oversee signature fundraising and donor stewardship events

●     Make direct, face-to-face solicitations

●     Manage relationships with high-level volunteer fundraisers (Friends oF Breast Cancer Action)

●     Recruit, train, and support key staff to assist in advancement efforts

●     Communicate fundraising goals throughout the organization and equip team members to reach them

●     Identify staffing needs, interview candidates, and on-board well-qualified personnel

Overall role, you get to:

●     Support overall fundraising and implementation of the strategic plan (including playing a supportive role in fundraising efforts)

●     Prepare written proposals, reports, meetings summaries, and related materials as required

●     Develop funder relationships alongside Executive Director

●     Monitor fundraising and grants calendar across all implicated staff

●     Effectively collaborate with partner organizations in joint fundraising

●     Research and apply for grants

●     Expand funding portfolio

●     Alongside Executive Director develop and oversee a fundraising plan

●     Develops and builds relationships with foundations and funders


Operations, Administration, and Compliance Management (25%)-- Sr. Operations

●     Direct and manage the overall operations of BCAction.

●     Oversee the financial management and be responsible for ensuring quality and integrity of the systems and policies.

●     Oversee management of contracts, procurement, and operations.

●     Oversee human resource management at BCAction.

●     Support and oversight to the team in all program planning, budgeting, documentation and monitoring.

●     Ensure timely, accurate and quality financial and narrative reporting compliance with donors.

●     Ensure efficient and functioning operation systems.

●     Foster intra-department linkages, communication and synergies within BCAction.

●     Implement and foster adherence to the established BCAction policies, regulations, guidelines and procedures and strengthen transparent governance.

●     Contribute effectively to the overall strategic visioning, conceptual development, planning and monitoring of BCAction’ work.

●     In collaboration with the Executive Director, appoint senior leadership/management and all other employees.

●     Ensure adherence to policies and statutory compliance.


Strategic Management and Leadership

●     In collaboration with the Executive Directors, the Deputy Director will be responsible for the strategic directions of BCAction.

●     Support management of the organization’s strategic plan, budget and fundraising strategy.

●     Supervise and mentor senior staff to ensure quality work and accountability.

●     Ensure the operationalization and adherence to all BCAction’ policies and procedures.

●     Create a supportive environment that fosters personal responsibility and commitment to BCAction goals and values.

●     Identify best practices and improve internal systems with an eye toward future needs and budget realities.

●     Mentoring, coaching; visible, approachable sounding board/resource

Internal and External Relations

●     Facilitate internal processes for BCAction staff that build skills and commitment to organizational values and social justice.

●     Demonstrate effective, values driven leadership to all BCAction staff.

●     In collaboration with the executive director, foster a conducive environment that is transparent, accountable and supportive.

●     Work collaboratively with the Executive Director on strategic decisions and leadership of BCAction.

●     Represent BCAction at national processes and events in and beyond.

●     Manage donor relations in collaboration with the Executive Director.

●     Coordinating and Managing the board/board governance

●     Facilities management

●     Develop, implement, and oversee HR infrastructure, policies, and strategies including recruitment and hiring of new staff

●     Oversee operations, including basic accounting

●     Supervise, train, and develop operations coordinator

●     Share representation of BCAction in partnerships with ED

●     Track and evaluate progress on internal goals and strategies

●     Plan, coordinate, and execute the annual budget process including collectively budgeting with staff managing effectively within this budget, and reporting accurately on progress made

●     Oversee organizational development strategies

●     Work with the Operations Coordinator to plan and implement planning and staff development retreats

●     Manage the infrastructure to ensure the organizational, operational, legal and financial health and effectiveness of the organization

●     Collaborate with Executive Director and lead team to maintain and advance an organizational culture that supports work/life balance and foster positive staff relations

●     Ensure that staff members receive the evaluation, training, support, supervision and leadership development that they need to succeed

●     Work with staff to develop objective performance measurements across all sites, to ensure consistent, high quality evaluation and goal setting for all employees.

●     Instill a sense of accountability among department leads by modeling tight oversight of individual and organization performance standards.

●     Recruit, hire, and oversee training and orientation of all staff members

●     Oversee and assist in grant writing and development

●     Support overall fundraising and implementation of the strategic plan (including playing a supportive role in fundraising efforts)

●     Prepare written reports, meetings summaries, and related materials as required

●     Develop funder relationships alongside Executive Director

●     Monitor fundraising and grants calendar across all implicated staff

●     Effectively collaborate with partner organizations in joint fundraising


Programs and Government Affairs (20%)--Sr. Program and Research

●     Manages local, state, and federal relationships that benefit the programs and policies of a company

●     Oversee and liaison coalitions and large projects

●     Develop and oversee an internal policy agenda

●     Structure and lead teams to deliver outstanding deliverables.

●     Build and maintain strong partner and stakeholder relationships; exceptional relationship-builder.

●     Represent BCAction in partner meetings, conferences, professional associations, and other public venues.

●     Develop thought leadership around specific topics/emerging practice areas.

●     Share in knowledge dissemination, reporting, and communications.

●     Researches and monitors government activities that could affect the organizations business and clients

●     Assists management and leadership with strategic planning for known and potential regulatory activities related to industry

●     Builds and maintains professional relationships with members of federal, state, and local government entities and agencies, scientific and community partners

●     Write actions, alerts, opEds, and position papers

●     Oversees government affairs, policies, and engagement

●     Oversees research and advocacy efforts


Reporting

●     The Deputy Director will lead all BCAction operations and oversee programming and development. They will report to the Executive Directors of BCAction.

●     The all managers and operations staff will report directly to the Deputy Director.


Qualifications

●     Knowledge of breast cancer and the breast cancer movement (preferred)

●     At least 5 years work experience with at least 3 years in an executive leadership role, experience is an advantage.

●     Experience in grant search, writing, and management

●     Excellent project management skills and extensive experience developing and delivering on goals and strategies;

●     At least three years of financial management experience

●     Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communications skills

●     Experience in public health, research, science, social justice, health justice, and/or any related field or movement

●     Some experience in advocacy or public policy

●     Comfortable with writing opEds, position pieces, blogs, and public speaking

●     Excellent organizational and leadership skills

●     An analytical mindset with great problem-solving abilities

●     Excellent interpersonal skills

●     Qualifications Master’s degree desirable but not required.
