Urban Initiatives Overview

Founded in 2003, Urban Initiatives is a nonprofit organization that runs youth development programs in the Chicago Public Schools (CPS). Urban Initiatives’ mission is to empower Chicago’s youth to become community leaders through academic success, healthy living, and social-emotional learning. We amplify the inherent power of sports and teamwork to unify diverse stakeholders and strengthen communities. Urban Initiatives takes a collaborative, whole child approach to development in order to provide children with ongoing

opportunities to reach their full potential. Currently, Urban Initiatives serves 17,000 students throughout the City of Chicago.

Continuum Overview

Our Continuum of Programming prepares and supports youth as they navigate elementary, middle, high school, and beyond. Through three successive program models, our participants progress from Player to Captain to Coach. Teamwork, peer mentorship, and the imperative  to “pay it forward” to other students and community members are key to our approach. As participants reach middle and high school, they pass on the lessons they have learned to the next generation.

Principal Responsibilities

The Program Coordinator dedicates their time to implementing and supporting Urban Initiatives’ Work to Play (WTP) and Take the Lead (TTL) programs in a cluster of schools (4-5 schools). They are responsible for maintaining consistent, high program quality and ensuring the WTP and TTL outputs are delivered as planned.  Program Coordinators will also have responsibilities in the Coach for Success program through relationship building and occasional implementation support. They work in collaboration with the Continuum team, which consists of two Continuum Program Directors, five Program Managers, and six Program Coordinators to coordinate key areas of program operation. The Program Coordinator will report to a Program Manager.

This position is a good fit for someone with a strong interest in the nonprofit sector, specifically within the field of youth development, and gaining experience in program coordination in a collaborative environment. The Continuum Department at Urban Initiatives seeks a team member who is eager to contribute in a fast-paced environment and takes initiative to build positive relationships with youth, ensure smooth program operation, and high program quality.
