Position: Virtual Career Cohort Leader

Reports To: Assistant Deputy Director of Programming


Job Description

The Career Cohort Leader will effectively lead, supervise, evaluate, and support up to 15 youth participants in YOU Boston’s virtual career exploration program during each 10-week cycle. The Career Cohort Leader must provide virtual classroom management assistance while youth participants engage in career training sessions led by YOU Boston Virtual Instructors and personal development workshops. The Cohort Leader must commit to YOU Boston’s fall, winter, and spring career cohort cycles, beginning on Monday, September 27th, 2021, and ending on Friday, June 3rd, 2022.

Who We Are

As part of the Mayor’s Office of Workforce Development, Youth Options Unlimited Boston (YOU Boston) is a youth development program that specializes in providing case management services and career development opportunities to Boston-area teens and young adults.


Who We Serve

YOU Boston serves young people ages 14-24, who may be court-involved, gang-affiliated, or at-risk. All of the young people we work with are dealing with barriers to stable employment and educational attainment. However, there is no typical YOU Boston member. Our clients come from a diverse spectrum in regards to their home life, education status, court involvement, and work history. Every young person we employ is held to high standards of professionalism, commitment, and attendance.


What you’ll be doing:

The daily duties of the Career Cohort Leader include but are not limited to the following:


  1. Create and lead dynamic daily check-in and check-out sessions, which can include ice breakers, team building activities, mindfulness activities, videos, music, hot topic discussions, and other appropriate activities and techniques.
  2. Record participant attendance and case notes daily in our ETO database system.
  3. Participate in career cohort sessions on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm by supporting the Virtual Instructor with virtual classroom management and encouraging youth participation.
  4. Collaborate with Virtual Instructors to address participant misconduct, lack of participation, poor attendance, or inappropriate behavior using the Virtual Program Expectations document.
  5. Support in the distribution of cohort supplies during each cycle.
  6. Conduct check-ins with Virtual Instructors around general day-to-day programming.
  7. Work collaboratively with YOU Boston staff to ensure the safety and progress of all youth participants.
  8. Work in daily collaboration with YOU Boston Database Administrator and Career Development staff to ensure the completion and submission of all agency mandated documentation.

Who we are looking for:

We are looking for strong leaders, those with the experience and/or an interest in working with young people. This position requires high-level organizational and interpersonal skills. Applicants must be able to efficiently design and lead job readiness workshops, manage a project, work collaboratively as part of a team, and communicate effectively with staff, youth, and community partners. Our Career Cohort Leaders are often current or future professionals within or related to the fields of education, social work, human services, and workforce development. Other common previous positions include: City Year and AmeriCorps members and career changers desiring experience within the nonprofit field. Applicants who do not have prior experience will still be considered if they possess other relevant strengths/skills and are passionate about working with young people and giving back to the community.


Requirements and Notes for Consideration:

●      Bachelor’s Degree or working towards that with at least two years of experience working with teens preferred

●      Hourly Pay is $20.00 at 30 hours per week

●      The schedule is Monday - Thursday 1:00 pm - 7:30 pm, and Friday 9:00 am - 3:30 pm (30-minute unpaid break)

●      Must be able to participate in three in-person career exploration events per cycle with your assigned cohort, located within or just outside of Boston

Your employment status will be as a temporary at-will employee. As an at-will employee, either YOU Boston or you (the at-will employee) may terminate your employment at any time with or without notice or with or without cause. The location of your position will be on YOU Boston premises or designated worksite. Your check will be issued by the Economic Development and Industrial Corporation.
