Deputy Director of Development

Fuel the organization that is making sure alternative proteins are no longer alternative

The Good Food Institute (GFI) is at the forefront of the movement to use food technology and markets to solve some of the world’s biggest problems, from climate change and global hunger to antibiotic resistance and the exploitation of animals.

How You Will Make a Difference

GFI is 100% supported by philanthropy. In this role, you will directly impact the transformation of the global food system by helping to lead the Development Department to continued success in fundraising. Working with the Director of Development, you will set the strategy and ensure smooth operation of the Development Department. The Deputy Director of Development will be responsible for:

  • Managing four team members directly and assisting the Director of Development with the oversight of the Development Department (soon to be 14 team members) and with supporting the international affiliate fundraisers.
  • Setting strategic vision for GFI’s Annual Fund and stewardship program.
  • Overseeing all development operations, including the hiring, training, and professional development of staff, reporting processes, and SOPs.
  • Partnering with the Director of Development to build out and strengthen our development practices to align our work across the team and across the organization.
  • Working with the Director of Development to strengthen DEI efforts on the Development team.
  • Supporting the Director of Development in projecting fundraising targets and providing budget oversight.
  • Helping oversee the creation, evaluation, and recalibration of Development team objectives and key results.
  • Cultivating a positive and collaborative team environment, helping to motivate the team working under you and to managing team workflow.
  • Building strong internal relationships to ensure consistent, accurate information exchange between the Development team and other GFI departments, including five international affiliates.
  • Ensuring that the Development team properly uses Salesforce and other donor resources to coordinate and track donor engagement strategies, record activities, maintain updated prospect information, and manage gift documentation.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Who We’re Looking For

The Deputy Director of Development must have:

  • A bachelor’s degree and at least eight years of experience in a development role, with at least three years of experience in a leadership position.
  • Strong collaborative problem-solving skills in which you seek to understand and make smart decisions through effective communication and leading by example.
  • Exceptionally strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to thrive in a dynamic environment—comfort pivoting to meet opportunities while paying attention to strategic priorities.
  • Excellent project management skills, including understanding of tactical fundraising systems; e.g. prospect tracking and scheduling, CRM maintenance (Salesforce preferred), etc.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Experience managing teams, with ability to mentor and inspire team members.
  • Knowledge of best practices in annual fund giving cultivation and stewardship.
  • Ability to problem solve under pressure and adapt to rapidly evolving organizational growth opportunities.
  • Understanding of nonprofit budgeting, accrual revenue recognition,  and auditing processes.
  • Comfort working remotely and in a rapidly growing and evolving organization.
  • Strong support for GFI’s philosophy and mission; demonstrated interest in public health, environmentalism, animal protection, or hunger relief.
  • Preferred: Experience integrating DEI principles and practices into team culture.

We want the best people and we don’t want biases holding us back. We strongly encourage people of every color, orientation, age, gender, origin, and ability to apply. Because we value a diverse workplace, we prioritize an inclusive climate absent of discrimination and harassment during the application process and after you join the team.
