About the Role 

The Controller provides key support in the areas of financial reporting, grant compliance, and financial operations. Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Controller will lead the accounting function at New Classrooms and manage an Accounting Manager and Staff Accountant. The ideal candidate should have significant nonprofit accounting experience and be comfortable working in a fast-paced work environment.

What You Would Do

  • Oversee accounting processes at New Classrooms. Manage the month-end close process, review financial results monthly, and produce financial reports. 
  • Manage cash balances, deposit checks, review disbursements prior to processing, and sign off on bank reconciliations.
  • Manage accounts payable, including review and approval of invoices for payment. Review debit card purchases, bank statements, and wire payments.
  • Oversee employee expense reimbursement processing, communicate policies, and ensure timely processing.
  • Review and provide appropriate accounting for cash receipts.
  • Review terms of grants, interpret restrictions, and manage procedures to ensure grant compliance.
  • Manage the indirect cost rate negotiation for federal funding.
  • Design and maintain the chart of accounts.
  • Develop and manage a system of internal controls. Draft and maintain appropriate documentation including a Financial Policies and Procedures manual, organization Travel Policy, and other relevant documentation.
  • Manage the audit for New Classrooms, prepare supporting documentation and schedules, develop timeline, and ensure timely completion.  Scope of work includes audited financial statements, A-133 audit, and preparation and submission of Form 990. Manage audit firm relationship, including audit firm selection, relationship management, and acting as the liaison between the audit firm and New Classrooms.
  • Manage support staff, which currently includes an Accounting Manager and Staff Accountant.
  • Other initiatives to support the mission of New Classrooms and its employees.

What We Are Looking For

  • A Bachelor’s degree in accounting and CPA designation. Master’s degree preferred but not required.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in nonprofit accounting
  • 3+ years experience managing accounting staff
  • Solid understanding of accounting principles and the preparation of financial statements
  • High proficiency in the use of financial software applications (Intacct a plus) and advanced proficiency in Excel 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Working knowledge of government grant accounting and donor-restricted funds
  • Ability to handle highly sensitive information and maintain strict confidentiality
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to keep up with a busy and diverse task list
  • Comfort working in a highly collaborative start-up/entrepreneurial work environment
  • Ability to work easily with people at all levels of the organization
  • Team player with a willingness and eagerness to help
  • Self-starter able to work independently and under direction
