Job Function
Reporting to the Associate Deans of Beyond Barnard, the Senior Associate Director for Health Professions Advising will provide advising and support to students and alumnae of Barnard College seeking careers in health fields.

Monday – Friday 9AM to 5PM Occasional evening and weekend hours as needed.


Position Summary Information

Essential Duties Summary

  1. Advise students individually and in groups on all matters pertaining to curriculum choices, the timing of graduate exams, balancing curricular goals with other interests, and application processes for all graduate programs related to health professions, with particular attention to those students applying to medical school, dental school, veterinary school, and similar programs.
  2. Present regular workshops and webinars on application processes and best practices for individuals interested in pursuing diverse work in the health professions.
  3. Oversee all work related to the application of students to the health professional schools, as well as to post-bacc programs and related academic enhancement.
  4. Support the work of the Health Professions Advisory Committee
  5. Work with student groups on campus related to the academic graduate fields in preparation for the health professions.
  6. Be aware of the opportunities in the health professions, and be able to guide students along the paths best aligned with their interest.
  7. Monitor, track, and assess student progress through the application system and beyond.
  8. Continue to spearhead letter-writing responsibilities for medical school applicants.
  9. Host information sessions, workshops, fairs or other programs for disseminating information.
  10. Attend national conferences and keep abreast of latest developments in the professions.
  11. Manage assessment plan with the Director of Institutional Research.
  12. Assume responsibility for special projects as assigned by Beyond Barnard Associate Deans.
  13. Oversee the work of the part-time pre-health adviser.
  14. Other duties as assigned.

• The ability to absorb detail and multitask is essential.
• The ability to understand and adhere to college and national policy and to decipher between confidential and need-to-know information is a must.
• Diplomacy and the ability to work as a member of a team is essential.
• Ability to focus and work quickly, to handle multiple tasks and set priorities
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Ability to relate effectively and positively with students, alumnae, parents, staff members, faculty members, and colleagues
• Maturity, sensitivity, tact, judgment, and ability to maintain confidentiality
• Ability to contribute to the tone of professionalism in the office and to remain calm and flexible under pressure
• Ability to work effectively in a setting that requires extensive cooperation and collaboration among all staff members


Required Qualification Summary

• Master's degree required
• 5 years of related work experience preferably in higher education, with background in academic advising, teaching, or related field and at least 3 years of health advising experience required.
• Must be willing to work during the summer months; some weekend and evening work will occasionally be required.
