The Academic Instructor will be responsible for the ESL/EFL and GED/HISET curriculum development and educational support for NSC’s Youth Career Readiness Placement Program funded by WIOA (Workforce Innovative Opportunity Act). This program is designed to serve Youth (16-24yrs) with or without credentials giving each participant access to employment, education, training, and supportive services to increase success in the labor market and to match employers with the skilled workers they need to compete in the global economy. The goal of the ESL and EFL portion of the program is to enhance English language of participants to prepare them for either occupational skills training or GED/HISET courses.


Essential Functions

· Develop curriculum for both ESL/EFL and GED/HISET classes 30 students per year

· Assist with coordinating teacher schedules and general operations for the smooth running of classes. Assist Program Coordinator with the recruitment of volunteer teachers

· Conduct participant pre and post testing using The Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS)

· Support students in increasing their NRS levels through ESL and EFL programming

· Develop curriculum that will provide students with the knowledge needed to pass the required sections of the GED/HISET

· Willingness to work a flexible schedule as class times are subject to change based on student availability

· Perform other duties as assigned by Program Coordinator


Non-Essential Functions

1. Adheres to NSC’s security guidelines and ensures the appropriate handling of sensitive information.

2. Attends relevant staff meetings to promote communication and execution of goals.

3. Other duties as assigned within the scope of position expectations.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

A. Understanding of health and wellness and survivor services’ departmental goals and objectives and ability to work and contribute as part of a larger team.

B. Strong ability to adapt to the use of computer programming and digital learning platforms in order to deliver class curriculum in a virtual environment

C. Demonstrates ability to manage multiple tasks by carefully setting priorities, meeting deadlines, and scheduling time efficiently.

D. Ability to develop and adapt curriculum to meet the needs of students academic levels

E. Understanding of NRS levels scores in order to implement programming

F. Ability to organize tasks in an efficient manner and follow-up and follow-through with strong attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.

G. Demonstrates ability to work with other people through a cooperative effort.

H. Possesses strong interpersonal skills as demonstrated by compassionate, courteous, cordial, cooperative, and professional interaction with diverse groups.

I. Adheres to all NSC policies and procedures.


Experience, Education, and Licensure

Minimum Experience: 1 year experience teaching

Minimum Education: Associates degree

Language: Bi-lingual in Spanish highly preferred

1. The noise level in the work environment is frequently high.

2. Although work is primarily indoors, you may be required to travel outside to community and social service locations.

3. Position may require occasional trips to attend conferences seminars, and meetings.

4. Work outside of traditional work hours may be necessary based on operational and agency needs.
