Ionia R. Whipper Home, Inc. (IWH), a nonprofit agency serving women in transition in the Washington, D.C. area for 90 years, is seeking a highly qualified and experienced candidate for the position of Executive Director. Because of the historical and long standing significance the IWH has established in the community, the highly skilled candidate will continue the rich legacy and ensure the sustainability into the 21st century.

The IWH commitment to helping young women and children by providing transitional housing and supportive services will be the primary goal of the Executive Director. We’re looking for a highly skilled Executive Director to help us fulfill this important undertaking. Reporting to the board of directors, the Executive Director will oversee the strategic and operational efficiency of our programs and staff. The Executive Director should have proven experience developing a fundraising plan and implementing it. Prior experience managing and hiring staff is essential, and establishing relationships with local community and social service organizations is preferred. Above all, the Executive Director will be comfortable in a leadership role that demands clear communication and decisiveness. 

 Qualifications: Successful candidates must possess Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Business Administration, or in a closely related field awarded by an accredited college or university. Additionally, the Executive Director must have four (4) years of full-time professional experience, two (2) of which were in a management or leadership role with responsibilities including supervising staff and volunteers, organizing activities and events. Proven experience with budget execution of non-profit organization or community based social service agency or program is well desired. 

 Preferred Candidate Qualifications: Prior experience managing social service caseloads for troubled and/or court referred young women; grant research and writing experience, with both public and private sources; strong verbal and written communication skills; strong public relations, marketing, and fundraising experience; a knowledge of federal and local laws and regulations relative to program funding; a knowledge of leadership and management principles relative to running a nonprofit organization; experience working with a board of directors; entrepreneurial mindset, with innovative approach to business planning; dynamic and charismatic team player who enjoys being the public face of an organization.


Daily and Monthly Objectives and Responsibilities

The Executive Director (ED) works very closely with the Board of Directors (Board) and board committees to ensure all Organizational Strategic Plan objectives are met. The ED provides oversight to ensure short and long-term goals are achieved and fulfills the daily and monthly operational requirements of the organization.

The following summarized list is provided:

·      Identify and implement staffing requirements for efficient operations, maintaining a strong culture and work climate that attracts and retains skilled and experienced staff, and furthers the organization’s mission

·      Represent the organization and increase awareness as spokesperson and liaison with local media and with community partners and stakeholders

·      Manage monthly cash flow and maintain all financial records for reporting to the organization’s accounting firm

·      Responsible for compliance and adherence of all federal, state, and local non-profit regulations 

·      Works with accountant and other contractors to ensures all applicable District of Columbia and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requirements are timely filed 

  • Responsible for all annual fundraising goals, in partnership with board of directors, to secure financial support from foundations, corporations, individuals, and government funding sources
  • Responsible for oversight of all external communication materials including, website, marketing materials, newsletters and social media content
  • Responsible for the implementation and execution of IWH programs that engage clients and the community
  • Manage a culturally diverse staff, clientele and community whose skills, cultures and spoken languages reflect the communities IWH serves.

Employment Arrangement: We are looking to initially negotiate a one (1) term contract as a probationary period for both parties with options to invoke terminate by either party before the end of said period. During this period, individual will provide IWH with services as an independent contractor, and will not be an employee of IWH.  After the initial contract period, the IWH will is very interested in a renewable long-term option.   

Base Salary: $48,000 to $72,000 (negotiable based upon experience.) The one (1) year term to be paid monthly with a full-time commitment of 100 to 120 hours per month.
