For more than 175 years, the Wadsworth Atheneum has delighted audiences as Connecticut’s flagship visual arts institution. Founded in 1842 with a vision for infusing art into the American experience, the Wadsworth is home to a collection of nearly 50,000 works of art, spanning 5,000 years and encompassing European art from antiquity through Modernism as well as American art from the 1600’s through today.
We are the oldest continuously operating public art museum in the United States paving the way for encyclopedic museums across the country presenting engaging and groundbreaking exhibitions that explore every era of art history. The Wadsworth’s collection is both broad and comprehensive with works by masters such as Caravagio, Frederic Church, Salvador Dali and Joan Miro sharing space with works by living artists such as Sean Scully and Kehinde Wiley, painter of Barack Obama’s official portrait.
Why do we tell you all of this? Because we believe museums matter. Perhaps now more than ever. Inspiring everyone to experience and appreciate excellence in art and culture requires a team effort and the talents of a diverse, highly motivated group of people. The quality of this institution emanates as much from the collective work of our staff as it does our collection. So is the Wadsworth the place for you?
We are currently inviting applications for the position of Accountant. This is an entry level position well-suited for a recent grad looking to make their mark in the world of work or someone with 1 -2 years of accounting expertise who has found the for-profit environment just doesn’t inspire them. Don’t get us wrong, it’s still about debits and credits, journal entries, account reconciliations, statements and audits but at the end of the day, you know that your work helps to delight thousands of visitors young and old. We pride ourselves on shared learning whether it’s a public program or a weekly team meeting.
