Title: Family Support & Community Engagement Specialist

 

Serving Our Children’s Mission:

As the administrator for the federal DC Opportunity Scholarship Program (DC OSP), Serving Our Children is dedicated to the concept that all students, regardless of income or socioeconomic status, should have access to a quality education. To this end, Serving Our Children believes that parents should have access to as many school choice options as possible. Serving Our Children is especially focused on ensuring that lower-income families have access to scholarships that enable their children to attend quality private schools in Washington, D.C.

 

General Description: The Family Support & Community Engagement Specialist will be responsible for community outreach, and for assisting current and prospective DC Opportunity Scholarship families in all aspects of applying for, renewing and using their scholarship. He/she will assist families and students through a specialized case management system. The position reports to the Deputy Manager of Family & Community Affairs.

 

Specific Responsibilities include:

The below statements are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed by this position. Other duties may be assigned at any time.

·      Manages a caseload of families, ensuring ongoing and regular contact with current and new scholarship recipients and applicants

·      Assists families in understanding federal requirements for participation in the program, and how to obtain relevant documentation needed to determine eligibility

·      Works with families to troubleshoot challenges with school-life experiences, including offering solutions for academic support, tactics to manage school-related finances and other issues

·      Reviews financial aid documents for indicators of possible incompleteness, fraud, or other irregularities. Enters and updates new and renewal application information into database, adhering to procedures and protocols

·      Engages and educates families about the private school application process so they can make the best decisions with respect to securing placement at a participating private school

·      Interfaces with schools concerning placements, student withdrawals, and various other student issues

·      Collects, and organizes participant records/files for mailings, and filings

·      Attend and provide staff support at various community events held for families after-hours and on weekends

·      Maintains effective communication, cooperation and coordination with management and other staff members

·      Visit community, government and non-profit organizations to educate families about the scholarship program.

·      Take initiative to develop relationships with community, government and non-profit organizations to increase awareness of the scholarship program. Proactively identify and attend community events and activities that will increase awareness of and participation in the scholarship program.

 

Minimum Requirements:

 

·      ***Fluency in English and Spanish is mandatory for this position***

·      A BA/BS in education, public policy, social work, sociology or other related field

·      1-3 years of professional experience

·      Experience working effectively in partnership and collaboration with management and colleagues

·      Demonstrated ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, in a clear, comprehensible manner

·      Ability to relate to families, youth and school officials: must be able to connect to individuals from varied educational, cultural, and experiential backgrounds

·      Intermediate to advanced level of proficiency with Microsoft applications (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook), along with Adobe Acrobat

·      Comfortable working independently, but also collaboratively

·      Excellent problem solving skills

·      High motivation and dedication to the program mission, with a strong track record of taking initiative, setting and achieving goals

·      Experience with non-profit organizations a plus

Salary: Commensurate with experience

FLSA Status: Exempt
