Land Projects Manager - Job Announcement

The Dutchess Land Conservancy (DLC), Dutchess County, New York, is seeking a full time Land Projects Manager to join our team to be based in our Millbrook, NY office. The Land Projects Manager works under the direct supervision and guidance of the Director of Conservation to help implement the DLC's land conservation program. Responsibilities include working with the Director of Conservation to obtain new conservation projects, drafting conservation easements, and working together with landowners from project initiation to completion including coordinating with appraisers, attorneys and other consultants. Other responsibilities include working with farmers/landowners on purchase of development rights projects; preparing GIS maps and resource analysis of properties, providing conservation planning assistance, working with municipalities on the DLC’s Municipal Conservation Area Program and Municipal Assistance Program including acquiring lands for public preserves, review of comprehensive plans, zoning laws, open space plans, and proposed development projects in relation to sound planning concepts and resource protection; helping to manage the DLC’s trade lands program; ensuring DLC’s Board is familiar with proposed conservation projects including giving presentations at Board and other meetings, and outreach and education on conservation projects and matters. We will choose a candidate that best fits

our needs and who is willing to work collaboratively as part of a team. 

Skills and Experience Preferred:

•      A genuine interest and enthusiasm for land conservation and the environment.

•      Direct experience as a project manager for a land conservation or related organization. Suggested backgrounds include a Bachelor’s Degree and experience in landscape architecture, planning, law, environmental sciences, or other related field.

•      Proven ability to work under the guidance of a supervisor on diverse conservation projects for an established non-profit organization.

•      First-hand knowledge of conservation easements, land transactions, purchase of development rights, and other land conservation and planning tools is a plus.

•      Experience drafting conservation easements is a plus.

•      Ability to work with a diverse mix of individuals and groups on land preservation options.

•      Experience working with state and county agency staff, municipal leaders, and other funding partners on purchase of development rights projects and open space initiatives.

•      Experience reviewing zoning, comprehensive and open space plans as they relate to land conservation tools and techniques.

•      Ability to work with maps, GIS, and interpret natural resource information, and to understand maps as they relate to remote assessment of, and on-site visits to, properties.

•      Willingness to meet with landowners in collaboration with other staff on weekends and attend occasional evening meetings.

•      Ability and willingness to work through all phases of a complex project, with oversight as needed.

•      Experience working with a Board of Directors or Committees on project related topics.

•      Demonstrated ability to work as a team player with other staff members in a small office environment.

•      Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to assist with writing compelling grant proposals and other conservation related materials, that have been demonstrated in a wide variety of formats.

•      Experience with public speaking ranging from municipal meetings to small group meetings is a plus.

•      Proven ability to manage a workload with multiple, often competing priorities.

•      Ability to develop and work within budgets and deadlines.

•      Well organized, detail oriented, friendly, hardworking, dedicated, excellent management and follow up skills.

Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, ArcView (GIS).
