Summary:


The National Urban League (NUL) seeks a Senior Director, Youth Workforce Programs who is dynamic, energetic, and results-oriented individual with strong interpersonal skills and technical assistance in program development to lead NUL Workforce Development Division (WFDD)’s youth signature program. This program is an education and employment engagement program, connecting WFDD to NUL’s Education and Youth Development (EYD) Division. The program will introduce youth, ages 14-21, to career pathways and, for those eligible, employment while also strengthening or establishing existing youth development program at the affiliate level. Primarily and currently funded by the US Department of Labor, the Youth Program requires a dynamic, collaborative, individual who will oversee the day-to-day program management, supervise, and coach a small team that may include other inter- and intra-divisional teammates. Other critical responsibilities to include fostering strong relationships with multiple stakeholders (funders, affiliate staff, educational and employment partners, etc.), collaborating with other divisional and departmental colleagues with overlapping or intersecting impact, and serving as a national thought leader on youth development and workforce.


A successful candidate will have experience overseeing comprehensive programs that incorporate mentorship, are community-facing and engaging projects and include both job placement assistance and case management support. A successful candidate will also demonstrate a passion for social justice, equity, positive youth development, workforce development, and their connection to wealth-build

Essential Functions:

  • In addition to reporting to NUL Workforce Development Vice President, this position will also work closely with NUL’s Education and Youth Development Vice President and other divisional staff in order to strengthen and support career readiness components to Project Ready and better connect NUL’s post-secondary success portfolio of approaches and vision.
  • Develop and supervise the monitoring of outcomes across affiliates on key outcomes using NUL proprietary data management tools.
  • Manage financial component to program management (invoice curation, review, and approval, etc.)
  • Collaborate with affiliate directors and front-line staff to develop and refine strong education and workforce program model and Department’s approach to post-secondary success.
  • Work closely with the WFDD Vice President to participate in portfolio fund development from federal, private, and philanthropic sources
  • Serve as a thought leader and collaborator on broader equity policy domains that address wealth building and equity.
  • Through regular (remote and travel involved) site visits and training, provide affiliates with project related technical assistance support, capacity building, and professional development.
  • Promote cross-programmatic, divisional and departmental projects, initiatives, and culture via authentic collaboration.

Education:

  • MPA, MSW, or MS in Education or related degree preferred with prior experience in the education, youth development, or workforce development fields.

Experience:

  • Deep experience in workforce development, youth development, or post-secondary program design for youth.
  • Experience overseeing multiple funded programs within an affiliate or franchise model or frame.
  • 5-7 years of work experience, 3 years of which should be in non-profit and 2 years providing budgeting support and supervision of staff.
  • Experience developing and monitoring large and complex programs and budgets from inception to implementation to close-out.
  • Track record for producing tangible and durable results, creating innovations, working in diverse partnerships, and starting up new projects.
  • Experience managing education and/or workforce development federal grants or contracts is a plus

Skills & Knowledge:

  • Conversant and passionate about the intersection between workforce, youth development, and wealth-building. Conversant or knowledgeable on pressing issues impacting workforce and post-secondary success given the current economic environment.
  • Deep content knowledge of workforce development, youth development, or education program design and policy.
  • An understanding of the impact of race, class, culture, and language on community development success and a commitment to achieving greater equity.
  • Exceptional communication skills (public speaking, written, interpersonal, etc.)
  • Ability to work at a fast pace, juggle multiple projects and priorities, and thrive under pressure.
  • Results-oriented; detail-oriented; and comfortable analyzing and managing data.
  • Self-directed but able to take direction well.
  • Ability to lead project teams to achieve Project goals and in a manner that reflects an ethos of collaboration and teamwork.
  • Strong ability to listen, learn, motivate, and teach.
  • An internal work style that emphasizes the primacy of mission, the sharing of credit, and clear accountability for results
  • Ability and willingness for national travel up to 25 percent of time

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift to 15 pounds at times.
