Description

City Year’s national marketing-communications (MarComm) department is hiring a national senior communications manager for its content team focused on human centered, data-rich storytelling across a variety of platforms. The content team develops, creates and shares external content for a diverse range of general and target audiences including education, national service and nonprofit thought leaders; corporate/private investors; potential and current AmeriCorps members; and district and other community partners. Each team member develops specific audience/subject area expertise as well as contribute as a communications generalist.

The senior communications manager, corporate/philanthropic audience will focus on reaching our corporate partner and individual donor audience. Every year, more than 3,000 City Year AmeriCorps members serve as Student Success Coaches providing academic and social-emotional support to students in 300 high-need public schools across 29 U.S. cities. The senior communications manager will create content to engage both current and prospective donors who make City Year’s work in schools possible, working closely with our national development team to ensure content is informed by donor audience insights.

Reporting to the senior director of communications, this role will be based in Boston’s City Year headquarters as part of the national headquarters MarComm team working on initiatives across departments, disciplines, and sites in the City Year network nationwide.


  • Source, develop, write and edit content focused on the corporate/philanthropic audience, particularly current and prospective national corporate partners and individual donors who are part of City Year’s major gifts program, the Red Jacket Society. The content should be informed by donor audience insights and engagement goals.
  • Partner closely with the development team to understand content needs and insights on donor audiences.
  • Create effective SEO content (written, visual, audio, video) for use across multiple channels, including print, web, social, etc.
  • Cultivate understanding of and familiarity with SEO guidelines; contribute to building and refining City Year’s SEO strategy.
  • Partner with the creative team to ensure written and visual content work together to connect and inspire target audiences.
  • Serve as integral member of cross-functional MarComm team on different projects related to the donor audience, with opportunities to serve as project lead.
  • Support development and execution of communications strategy on helping donors and other stakeholders understand the organization’s value proposition, including City Year’s “communities of commitment” concept, to help reach City Year’s long-term goals.
  • Serve as communications expert/strategist for internal departments with communications needs focused on the corporate/philanthropic audience, including corporate development, major gifts/individual giving, and Executive Office, helping departments solve business challenges and meet goals.
  • Support communications team in development and implementation of national communications plan aligned to organization’s long-term impact goals.


Who Should Apply

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • 2-3+ years of experience in communications, writing and/or content creation; experience in business writing or writing for corporate audiences a plus.
  • Excellent communication, writing and editing skills.
  • Exceptional project and time management skills with ability to manage projects from conception to completion, execute projects to set goals and gather metrics to measure success.
  • Creative and passionate about finding new, compelling ways to reach and communicate with external audiences.
  • Adept at storytelling and editing raw content with a narrative eye, with keen understanding how to create content and tell stories for digital channels including web, e-mail, social and blog.
  • Ability to analyze large amounts of information and data in order to develop meaningful and engaging content.
  • Ability to work with people at all levels of an organization to complete projects.
  • Ability to thrive in a challenging, demanding, and rapidly changing environment with a “can-do” spirit and flexibility.
  • Understanding of and passion for the work City Year does in partnership with schools and communities to serve diverse populations.
