Brown Hope is searching for a Peer Support Specialist to join their staff on a full-time basis for a 6-month duration starting in August 2021. This is a non-exempt position that pays $23/hour and offers a full benefits package. Details of the position are below. 

SUMMARY: The Peer Support Specialist (PSS) for Brown Hope will work with the Director of Programs and other program staff to advance the implementation of Healing Initiatives community objectives.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct community outreach to raise awareness of Power Hour and promote as a space for Black, Brown, and Indigenous Portlanders in recovery
  • Attend all Power Hour events (currently happening between 6-8pm on Zoom) and provide at least 1-week advance notice if you cannot attend an event
  • Engage Power Hour attendees with respect, positivity, and a friendly approach
  • Facilitate a 20-35 minute peer recovery breakout space as part of Power Hour’s weekly event
  • Attend weekly Power Hour planning meetings with other Brown Hope staff
  • Review Brown Hope’s programs and provide recommendations on how make the organization’s program offerings more inclusive to people in recovery and recovery services
  • Connect Black, Brown, and Indigenous Portlanders in recovery to other program offerings of Brown Hope, such as Blackstreet Bakery and Mutual Aid
  • Provide a monthly report to Director of Programs about community engagement activities
  • Refer to Director of Programs as needs are presented by community members for ongoing support
  • Serve as an ambassador for Brown Hope at relevant community events; champion intersectional coalition building with Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Willingly and cooperatively perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Programs or CEO.
  • Complete weekly staff reporting form and participate in weekly check-ins with Director of Programs.
  • Serve as collaborative team member
  • Respond to all electronic communications within 24 hours.
  • Participate in All-staff activities (Book club, ice breakers, etc.,).
  • Attend all all-staff meetings, retreats, and staff professional development sessions.

QUALIFICATIONS

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is usually performed in an indoor office environment, or remote home office environment, with long periods at a desk. Work is oriented to community service and subject to constant work interruptions. Employees may work under the stress of continual contact from clients, community members, co-workers and business partners, and the pressure to meet deadlines.
