Director of National Membership


USHRN Mission: The US Human Rights Network is a national network of organizations and individuals working to strengthen a human rights movement and culture within the United States led by the people most directly impacted by human rights violations. USHRN works to realize human rights by:

·Engaging, connecting and mobilizing communities to uphold and defend human rights and hold government accountable.

·Building the capacity and leadership of grassroots groups.

·Facilitating effective collective action to secure the long-term structural change to achieve justice and fully realize human rights.

·Raising the visibility of local human rights concerns nationally, and internationally.


Reports to: Executive Director

Location: Atlanta, GA or Telecommute 


Position Overview: The National Membership Director is a position to support USHRN’s growth and to strengthen the internal systems of this national network and deepen our engagement with grassroots communities across the US. This position will supervise administrative processes within the organization that guide the organization’s membership cultivation and management, design and implement leadership programs and work closely with the Executive Director in strategic planning, community relations and organizational administration.


As the Director, this position will lead education, recruitment, and coordination of current and future members towards its goal to support and grow a people-centered human rights movement in the US. The Director is responsible for the USHRN’s efforts to expand and build/bolster the human rights capacity of its membership to support movement building. S/he will strengthen USHRN’s membership base among directly-affected communities, grassroots and community based organizations, policy advocacy groups, social justice organizations, and others by deepening understanding of human rights organizing and building connections between members across different issue groups.


Duties and Responsibilities:


Membership

·Develop strategy for growing and engaging USHRN's membership including new constituents

·Lead the Network in identifying and cultivating grassroots membership.

·Design, implement and manage USHRN membership processes using secure and efficient software and technology. (i.e., Salsa Engage)

·Coordinate and monitor individual and organizational membership renewal and retention including distributing new member packets, sending renewal reminders, and engaging member participation in USHRN campaigns, meetings and conferences.

·Maintain current database and knowledge of member strategic organizing across the US. Work with relevant staff (Media Strategist) and interns to maintain membership database. 

·Design and develop USHRN regional membership meeting goals and processes, including facilitation of quarterly new member orientation.

·Coordinate USHRN presence in movement-building spaces such as conferences, meetings, actions, including offering workshops on human rights education, organizing strategies and advocacy, and other outreach activities.

·Supervise the production of educational resources and materials on human rights for member outreach working closely with International Mechanisms Director

·Manage application and renewal process for membership-based committees and action teams/working groups (MIAT).

·Supervise coordination of quarterly meetings of membership-based committees and member initiated action teams/working groups .

·Generate quarterly report on membership outreach and activities for the Executive Director and Board.


Human Rights Education, Leadership, and Capacity Building

·Design, implement and evaluate leadership and educational programming for members including workshops and webinars.

·Coordinate the creation of workshops on human rights education, organizing strategies and advocacy to support leadership and capacity development with members.

·Design, implement and manage leadership programs, including FIHRE Fellowship program.

·Lead the Organizing, Leadership and Sustainability Team to deliver human rights trainings that intersect with issues relevant to network membership.


Communications Support

·Support communications staff by ensuring events are photographed or recorded

·Coordinate support for organizational members through amplifying their strategic work

·Represent USHRN as a spokesperson with external audiences and stakeholders and manage relationships with key partners.


Membership Donation Database

·Work with relevant staff to manage membership financial contributions, and funding requests for membership based committees and action teams/working groups.

·Manage donation reporting with Operations & Administration Team.


Other duties and expectations include:

·Work some evenings and weekends.

·Travel as necessary


Qualifications: The USHRN is looking for a dynamic individual with demonstrated commitment to human rights values – including participatory decision making, building multi-lingual spaces, anti-racism, anti-sexism and support of LGBTQ communities. Specific qualifications and required experience include:


· A Master’s degree or equivalent in Human Rights, law, political science, international relations, social sciences or a related area or a B.S. degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

· At least 5 years Domestic (U.S.) organizing experience, with proven track record of successful organizing efforts;

·Familiarity with human rights standards, principles, laws and mechanisms, as well as social justice advocacy;

·Familiarity with the international human rights mechanisms.

·Prior experience in designing and conducting workshops for community members that are responsive to cultural, language, and educational differences;.

Experience working in racially, economically and linguistically diverse communities in the U.S.;

·Ability to thrive in fast paced, stimulating campaign environment, and to work as a team player;

·Capacity to coordinate multiple tasks, activities and projects successfully;

·Strong writing skills, strong verbal and interpersonal communications skills; Strong organizational skills. Must be detail oriented;

·Ability to thrive in high paced, stimulating campaign environment, and to work as a team player and get the job done

·Ability and willingness to travel, and work on weekends and evenings;

·Fluent in English (required)

·Belief and agreement with USHRN guiding principles.

Compensation: Salary range is $60,000 to $70,000, depending on experience, and is full time. Generous benefits package includes health, dental, and vision insurance, employer-supported pension plan, short and long-term disability insurance, life insurance, and generous vacation, holiday, personal and sick days. This is a full-time position and could be located in Atlanta or Telecommute.
