OVERVIEW

New Settlement is operating Learning Labs, an initiative funded by the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) to complement blended learning, in-person services for students in grade six through eight from CMSP 327.  Learning Labs will provide small group academic and enrichment activities to students on the days in which students are not receiving in-person services in school. 

Located at 1484 Inwood Avenue, Learning Labs will operate Monday through Friday, from 7:30am to 3:30pm. Activities include Remote Instruction, Literacy, Physical Fitness, Civic Engagement, Social Emotional Supports and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math activities). 

The program will follow all New York State Department of Health COVID 19 Safety and Health guidelines.

ACTIVITY SPECIALISTS are responsible for teaching one or more workshops for no more than 10 children per group in Physical Fitness, Civic Engagement, Social Emotional Supports and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, and the arts.

All staff will follow goals of positive youth development, social emotional competencies and youth leadership.  

ACTIVITY SPECIALIST QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of three years’ experience instructing students in a fitness, STEAM field in a similar program setting, working directly with middle-school aged children and collaborating effectively with classroom teachers and/or youth-development professionals to develop and implement the arts program component. High-school diploma required; Bachelor of Arts, or creative field preferred. Bilingual English and Spanish skills are a plus.

Our community services currently provide year-round educational, cultural and recreational programs and social services to more than 11,000 youth and adults who live in the surrounding area.
