The Brooklyn Community Bail Fund pays bail for New Yorkers who can’t afford even modest amounts, and who would be jailed or forced to plead guilty just to go home. After bail is paid, the Fund provides and facilitates access to services for clients in need by partnering with teams of public defenders, reentry specialists, and social service providers.
We work with allies here in New York, and across the country, in the fight to end cash bail. Our organization is a radical intervention in a system that treats people differently based on wealth, skin color, and influence. We’re challenging the criminalization of race and poverty, the practice of putting a price on fundamental rights, and the persistent myth that bail is a necessary element of the justice system.
Since opening our doors in April 2015, we have expanded to serve more than 3,000 New Yorkers and now operate in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Staten Island. We are a dynamic, fast-paced organization and have grown significantly in a short period of time. Brooklyn Community Bail fund seeks a Director/Manager of Advocacy and Partnerships (title dependent on level of experience) to further BCBF’s mission to abolish money bail and all forms of wealth-based detention, and drive incremental reforms to ensure harm reduction for individuals currently impacted by the system. The Dir/Manager of Advocacy and Partnerships also works in collaboration with senior leadership and in coalition with community partners to shape, execute, and lead advocacy campaigns that amplify the organization’s voice and impact. This also expands BCBF’s reach and influence with advocacy targets, networks, and stakeholders. In this role you would also manage and/or support existing campaigns and coalitions.
- Bachelor's degree minimum
- 3-5 years’ experience in any of the following:
- Policy and advocacy related to criminal legal system
- New York State legislative system and process
- Public defense
- Bail system and reform efforts
- Preference given for individuals with significant knowledge of criminal legal system, bail, and criminal justice reform in NY
- Demonstrated commitment to racial and economic justice and strong intersectional analysis
- Excellent and persuasive written and verbal communication across varied media – including comfort with facilitating meetings and speaking publicly.
- Ability to work with many different stakeholders (from grassroots coalition partners to elected officials) and experience working with coalitions is a plus
- Strong analytical skills and deep critical thinker
- Proactive and operates with a sense of urgency
- Ability to develop and execute work plans
- Proven experience managing and collaborating
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work on multiple projects at the same time and prioritize
- Demonstrated commitment to mission and team player
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed
- Lead the development and implementation of an advocacy program, connecting bail payment and services to systemic bail reform, overseeing overall strategy, messaging, external relationships, and internal programmatic collaboration.
Campaign strategy and coalition building
- Design and implement campaigns to achieve BCBF mission/vision
- Driving new campaigns from concept to launch, scheduling and cultivating content, and measuring and reporting on the results of campaigns.
- Represent BCBF on certain coalitions, and present opportunities for joining others.
- Identify opportunities for partnership and collaboration with other organizations to maximize campaign reach and impact.
- Represent and manage BCBF’s role in Court Watch NYC – a collaborative project with two partner organizations – overseeing overall project management and execution.
- Lead policy analysis and discussions with partners and city and state actors
Media and communications
- Design and manage an earned media and online communications strategy that accomplishes the following:
- Generates coverage to advance BCBF’s advocacy agenda
- Educates the public about the issue
- Builds support for BCBF’s positions
- Raises the profile of the organization
- Creates/solidifies a recognizable voice in the media and online
- Projects a strong organizational identity and consistent messaging
- Be a public spokesperson and initial lead contact with press on requests and drafting of press releases and quotes.
- Contribute to grant proposals, meet with large donors, and represent BCBF at fundraising events to build support for our efforts toward bail reform.
Staff recruitment, development, and management
- Supervise and support one part-time employee on Court Watch NYC project.
- Recruit new staff and volunteers to increase our impact.
- Work with the rest of BCBF Leadership Team on strategic program planning and organizational visioning.
- Represent organizational values and decisions internally and with external partners.
