The External Relations Manager will play a key role in strengthening Breakthrough New York’s position as a leader in expanding educational opportunities for NYC students. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, they will cultivate a strong community of donors, alumni, and community partners who believe in and champion Breakthrough New York’s mission. They will create and share original stories through our media outlets and press partnerships, and create meaningful opportunities for external partners to engage with our program.


YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:

Storytelling

  • Prepare original content by partnering with students, families, and constituents to share their stories and insights about educational equity and excellence
  • Manage quarterly newsletter and social media accounts
  • Regularly update website content
  • Draft copy for annual appeals and digital fundraising campaigns
  • Create and distribute annual report
  • Manage press partnerships and earned media strategy


Donor, Alumni & Community Engagement

  • Plan quarterly events for donors and key community partners (e.g., site visits, panels)
  • Steward portfolio of “next generation” individual donors, including managing associates board strategy 
  • Launch alumni council and build alumni engagement strategy


WE’RE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WITH:

  • At least 2 years experience in non-profit development, communications, and/or marketing
  • A self-starter and creative attitude, who will seek out opportunities to source, tell, and share inspiring stories and try new approaches to donor and community engagement
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • A people-first orientation to building relationships; the capacity to build trust and a sense belonging with individuals and within groups
  • Experience with social media, Wordpress, Canva; comfort with MailChimp and Adobe Illustrator

BREAKTHROUGH POINTS IF YOU:

  • Are a Breakthrough alumnus/a or have taught at a Breakthrough site previously 
  • Have graphic design skills


COMPENSATION:

BTNY strongly believes in selecting the top, qualified candidates. As a part of your offer you can expect to receive the following:

  • Annual Salary range is between $58,500 - $60,000 (commensurate with experience and skills) that is reviewed annually

COVID-19 VACCINATION:

While this role may begin remotely, BTNY anticipates returning to a hybrid work environment in mid-September 2021. BTNY will require all employees and ongoing-volunteers with in-person role responsibilities to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 prior to the start of their in-person role. That specific vaccination deadline will be communicated directly to candidates during the interview process. Candidates in need of an exemption from this policy due to a medical reason or because of a sincerely held religious belief must submit a request for accommodation as soon as possible after an offer has been made.
