Summary:   The Manager, Foundation and Government Support is the lead grant writer for a specific portfolio of programs within Safe Horizon, identifying, stewarding, and successfully raising funds from both foundation and government funding sources. They will research trends in the field, steward existing foundation donors, identify and strategize around new private funding sources, and cultivate prospective donors. The ability to coordinate and manage relationships with multiple departments within the organization as well with external prospects and donors is essential, as is a strong engagement and commitment to Safe Horizon organizational values and vision.

Essential Job Functions:

·         Identifies prospective private foundation donors for specific Safe Horizon programs, or general support, and researches whether and how their funding interests relate to Safe Horizon programs; 

·         Cultivates relationships with existing and prospective donors through discussion, correspondence, gift acknowledgement, meetings, and tours of Safe Horizon facilities;

·         Regularly researches and monitors federal, state, and local government funding sources for available solicitations and funding opportunities, identifying potential agency alignment and benefits;

·         Writes, reviews, and edits draft copy and produces and submits final proposals and reports;

·         Manages the foundation and government proposal processes from start to finish, acts as partner and project manager to agency departments through idea development, program planning, proposal, and budget stages;

·         Manages report and renewal process, including liaising with Program to gather narrative and statistical information and with Finance to ensure timely and accurate program/project budgets, for post-award foundation grants;

·         Creates and manages information and projects systematically, including creating systems of prospect identification and managing a grants calendar within Raiser’s Edge, ensuring that deadlines are met and all necessary follow up takes places to the overall donor cultivations/stewardship process;

·         Stays abreast of industry trends, needs, innovations, and opportunities; develops a deep familiarity with the approach and impact of Safe Horizon and the broader victims’ services context.

·         Works with Board members and other volunteers as necessary to identify and cultivate foundation donors;

·         Performs other duties as assigned.

 

 

Supervisory Reports:         N/A

 

Interacts with:        Foundation donors and prospects; Safe Horizon Board members, Executive, Senior,

                                     Program, Research and Evaluation, and Finance staff

 

Required Knowledge and Skills:

·         Advanced, superior writing skills – the successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to capture the purpose, importance, and impact of  programs and projects with an emphasis on effective structure, grammar, succinctness, and alignment with foundations’ giving interests;

·         Strong commitment to Safe Horizon agency values of client-centered practice, anti-racism, and family-centered programming;

·         Working knowledge of Raiser’s Edge (or comparable donor database), Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, and excellent research skills;

·         Strong verbal, interpersonal and communications skills and attention to detail;

·         Ability to work independently and under stress, manage a number of demanding and conflicting priorities in order to meet deadlines with well-crafted proposals and reports;

·         Strong organization and relationship management skills; 

·         Background in social justice or human services preferred; and

·         Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience.

 

Required Experience:

·         Minimum of two years of direct experience in grant writing, preferably from both public and private sources;

·         Strong working knowledge of local and national foundation donors and funding trends;

·         Experience with budget preparation and/or analysis – the ability to review budgets and ensure alignment with the funder’s interests and the proposal narrative;

·         Experience working with high-level program staff and board members;

·         Experience with Raiser’s Edge preferred.
