Employment Readiness and Placement Department

The Academic Instructor will be responsible for ESL curriculum development and educational support for NSC’s Family Literacy Program funded by the William Penn Foundation. This program is designed to serve families with Limited English Proficiency and with children ages 8 and under. The primary goal of the Academic Instructor is to enhance English language of participants in order to prepare them to navigate the education system in the United States.


Essential Functions

· Develop curriculum for ESL that can be delivered simultaneously to adults and children in the same household.

· Courses will be designed for children under 8 years old and adults, serving 60 families per program year.

· Create curriculum that provides key knowledge of the Education system and how to navigate it affectively in order to support their children’s success.

· Willingness to work a flexible schedule as class times are subject to change based on student and family availability

· Utilize zoom and Burlington English software to deliver ESL curriculum in an effective manner.

· Perform other duties as assigned by Program Manager


Non-Essential Functions

1. Adheres to NSC’s security guidelines and ensures the appropriate handling of sensitive information.

2. Attends relevant staff meetings to promote communication and execution of goals.

3. Other duties as assigned within the scope of position expectations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

A. Understanding of health and wellness and survivor services’ departmental goals and objectives and ability to work and contribute as part of a larger team.

B. Strong ability to adapt to the use of computer programming and digital learning platforms in order to deliver class curriculum in a virtual environment

C. Demonstrates ability to manage multiple tasks by carefully setting priorities, meeting deadlines, and scheduling time efficiently.

D. Ability to develop and adapt curriculum to meet the needs of students academic levels

E. Understanding of NRS levels scores in order to implement programming

F. Ability to organize tasks in an efficient manner and follow-up and follow-through with strong attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.

G. Demonstrates ability to work with other people through a cooperative effort.

H. Possesses strong interpersonal skills as demonstrated by compassionate, courteous, cordial, cooperative, and professional interaction with diverse groups.

I. Adheres to all NSC policies and procedures.


Experience, Education, and Licensure

Minimum Experience: 1-2 years’ experience teaching

Minimum Education: 4-year degree from an accredited college or university

Language: Bi-lingual in preferred

5. Specific vision abilities required by the job include frequent reading and close vision; distance vision; color vision; peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.

1. The noise level in the work environment is frequently high.

2. Although work is primarily indoors, you may be required to travel outside to community and social service locations.

3. Position may require occasional trips to attend conferences seminars, and meetings.

4. Work outside of traditional work hours may be necessary based on operational and agency needs.
