The goal of The University Settlement Education Services Department is to support young people in completing secondary education and successfully transitioning into post-secondary education and employment. The College Paths Learning Strategist will be responsible for delivering individual tutoring and small group instruction to high school or high school equivalency students enrolled in the Talent Search program at partner high schools, as well as coordinating academic supports with school staff. College Paths seeks to increase the number of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds who complete high school or equivalent and enroll in post-secondary education institutions of their choice. The College Paths Learning Strategist will support students in preparing to pass high school math classes and/or standardized math tests such as Regents exams, the SAT and ACT at a college-ready level.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one tutoring and small group instruction within and outside of the classroom setting during and after school
  • Develop and implement teaching strategies to assist struggling youth in academic skills, including, but not limited to, math subjects such as geometry and algebra as well as test taking strategies
  • Coordinate with classroom teachers at partner schools to respond to the instructional needs of the individual students
  • Provide differentiated instruction to a wide-range of learners using remediation, reinforcement, and enrichment techniques
  • Administer multiple forms of assessment, including summative and formative assessments, and use these assessments to inform lesson planning and day to day instructional strategies
  • Assist Supervisor of Academic Support Services in training volunteer tutors and aligning volunteer tutor supports to student need
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and practice the principals of positive youth development
  • Collect and maintain documentation of services and outcomes for internal and external use
  • Attend all relevant meetings, trainings, workshops and outside events
  • Handle any appropriate responsibilities and functions as assigned by supervisor and/or director
  • Serve as a member of interdisciplinary teams to ensure student success

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field required, Master’s preferred
  • Minimum of two years classroom teaching experience working with adolescents
  • The ideal candidate will be capable of teaching multiple subjects, however, strong familiarity with New York Common Core State Standards in mathematics is highly preferable as math instruction will be an essential part of this position
  • Familiarity with the new SAT and ACT preferred
  • Experience in curriculum design and implementation
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate and challenge students to achieve a high level of performance through rigorous academic performance
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel locally to partner high schools to deliver tutoring and instruction up to two days per week
  • Superior organization and collaboration skills: able to seamlessly and reliably coordinate schedule, instructional content/strategies, and student progress with supervisor, colleagues, and partners, including classroom teachers, and other administrative and support staff from University Settlement and the Department of Education and other partner high schools “Whatever It Takes” attitude to get young people to succeed academically
  • Knowledgeable of and able to apply positive youth development principles to working with young people
  • Proficiency in Spanish, French, or Mandarin
  • Commitment to social, economic and racial justice and sensitivity to the needs of diverse low-income adolescents of color, many from vulnerable populations (foster-care, homeless, undocumented, court-involved)

Hours: 35 hours per week

Salary: Mid to High 40’s
