About the Role:

The Managing Director for Campaigns and Programs supports the development and execution of high-impact campaigns and programs across multiple issues that incorporate government affairs, communications, and field strategies and advance the overall strategic mission of the organization to build an America as good as its ideals. This work includes leading staff within the department, enabling the achievement of ambitious and timely programmatic goals, developing, and executing on departmental goals, and ensuring the effective operation of a dynamic and strategic department. The Managing Director reports to the Executive Vice President, Campaigns and Programs.

What You Will Do:

  • Serve as a departmental thought-leader to determine the department’s strategic vision, set goals, monitor progress, and evaluate outcomes to ensure objectives are met and in line with the needs and mission of the organization.
  • Supervise the development and implementation of integrated (field, communications, and government affairs) strategic program and campaign plans.
  • Develop and implement systems and procedures to enable the efficient functioning of the department.
  • Provide strategic programmatic leadership for all facets of our multi-issue civil and human rights agenda.
  • Manage and supervise program and campaign staff.
  • Oversee the efficient drafting and vetting process of campaign and program plans prior to grant submission.
  • Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the department and work with program and campaign staff to develop responses and solutions.
  • As needed, participate in public education activities to articulate the organization’s views on a broad range of issues to the public and various stakeholder constituencies.
  • Build strategic alliances with organizations and individuals to advance the organization’s mission, engage on shared priorities, and exchange knowledge and information in support of the Leadership Conferences’ programs and campaigns.
  • Collaborate with leaders of the Field and Membership, Communications, and Government Affairs Departments to ensure smooth operation of the organization’s matrix structure.
  • Work with the Executive Vice President for Campaign and Programs, Executive Vice President/COO, and VP of Finance to develop financial estimates for project and departmental budgets.

What You Will Bring:

·      Demonstrated record of support for civil rights, social and equal opportunity.

·      A minimum of 10 years’ experience in national or state advocacy.

·      Law degree or advanced degree equivalent strongly preferred.

Required Skills/Knowledge  

  • Experience managing diverse staff and leading diverse teams.
  • Experience developing and executing program and/or campaign plans that include government affairs, communications, and field engagement strategies.
  • A proven track record in developing strategic programming and/or campaigns for civil rights, social justice, progressive, or related organization(s).
  • An innovative thinker who is able to translate strategic thinking into action.
  • A desire and an ability to work with multi-issue, intra-departmental teams.
  • An ability to lead, build and participate in teams including a willingness to circulate widely, communicate openly, listen well, and learn from others.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, including the ability to develop talent and foster a positive and creative work environment.
  • Working knowledge of intellectual curiosity for, and sophistication about public policy and research that undergird issue-based campaigns.

Salary Range – $139,050 - $162,740
