We are a highly motivated group of community leaders, organizers, coalition-builders, lawyers, and advocacy experts, and we are looking for people with exceptional talent to join our team. 

The Community Engagement Manager will promote and protect the civil liberties and civil rights of all residents of Wisconsin through education, outreach, advocacy, organizing, direct action, and programming for adults and youth. They will be responsible for both managing staff and being a visible leader who will create relationships and coalitions to advance our work.

Job Context 

This position is a regular exempt position. The Community Engagement Manager reports to the Advocacy Director. Although based in the Milwaukee area, their responsibilities will require limited travel around the state.

Program Responsibilities include: 

• Quickly developing a broad understanding and depth of knowledge about ACLU issue areas and positions in order to become a respected leader and advocate; 

• Coordinating and facilitating statewide programs that engage the public in promoting civil liberties, civil rights, and social justice; 

• Being a leader in public who is able to represent the ACLU with diverse organizations, elected officials, board members, stakeholders, media, coalitions and more broadly; 

• Educating and developing young people and adults to be informed advocates and defenders of civil liberties and social justice; 

• Communicating the intentions and accomplishments of the ACLU of Wisconsin in clear and inspiring ways; 

• Advocating and organizing effectively through volunteer engagement, social media, collaborations, events, trainings, and other methods;

• Completing goals, reports and responsibilities in a timely fashion; 

• Developing and maintaining strong networks to advance civil liberties and civil rights.

Management Responsibilities include: 

• Recruiting, team building, having weekly one-on-one meetings, supervising, and evaluating performance of program staff; 

• Recruiting and supervising volunteers as needed; 

• Assisting with developing and managing departmental and program budgets; 

• Assisting staff with design and implementation of programs, campaigns, and organizing strategies; 

• Evaluating efficacy of campaigns, trainings and programs, like ACLU’s student alliances, Youth Social Justice Forum, legal observing, and Election Protection, and work to improve their delivery and impact;

• Developing and providing professional development opportunities for staff and interns; 

• Completing reports pertaining to program and campaign achievement; 

• Sharing information and data with other departments so that they may better plan and communicate outside of the ACLU.

Job Requirements 

A successful candidate must have and maintain the following qualifications:

• Commitment to the mission and goals of the ACLU and racial equity is absolutely essential; 

• Management experience supervising staff, managing budgets and handling multiple priorities and projects effectively; 

• Extraordinary leadership skills and ability to quickly establish relationships;

• Proven experience organizing and grassroots movement building; 

• Experience communicating with others through a variety of platforms like email, Facebook, Slack, Twitter, Instagram or others; 

• A car and a valid Wisconsin driver's license and the ability to undertake travel within Wisconsin, as well as availability to work some evenings and weekends;

• Flexible team player who understands the opportunities and challenges of building and working in large, diverse coalitions, and sharing responsibilities and credit; 

• A demonstrated ability to successfully run programs, campaigns and events;

• A demonstrated ability to manage details and follow through without direct supervision;

• Proven ability to effectively communicate in writing and through public presentation; 

• Personal enthusiasm, optimism and a sense of humor.
