The Safe Horizon Domestic Violence Shelter program provides safe and confidential spaces for DV survivors and their children. Essential Job Functions:
The Childcare Aide is responsible for the following tasks:
- Learn and integrate a trauma-informed, client-centered approach, using an anti-oppressive lens, into your work with clients;
- Planning and coordinating fun and engaging year-round age-appropriate activities, events and trips for residents and their children;
- Actively supervising and engaging with children while their parents are receiving services onsite or out in the community;
- Attentively caring for infants, toddlers and school age children, which includes engagement, feeding, changing diapers, and maintaining a clean and welcoming environment;
- Observing children's behaviors and reporting concerns and or needs to appropriate staff;
- Facilitating large playgroups for children of all age ranges;
- Assisting with homework with older children and providing literacy rich environment for all children;
- Identifying resources and making referrals for parents and children to appropriate services providers in the community;
- Attending Staff meetings and trainings as requested;
- Other tasks as assigned
- Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries with residents and staff
- Utilization of Client Centered Practice (CCP) skills
- Ability to use neutral and non-judgmental language when responding to clients
- Understanding and responding to vicarious trauma
- Ability to engage with clients using a trauma informed perspective
- Must be flexible, patient and able to juggle multiple roles simultaneously
- High School Diploma, or GED, childcare certification preferred.
- Minimum of one year experience providing childcare.
- Some experience or training in dynamics of family violence and its impact of children.
- Knowledge of domestic violence and child abuse/neglect is desired.
- Experience working with children and families, knowledge of child development
- Strong interpersonal skills are necessary.
- Bilingual ability and experience working with children with special needs a plus.
- Ability to use computer to retrieve emails, maintain activity logs and enter client notes
- Required to work overtime as needed, including holidays and during clement weather, various hours, typically two evenings weekly.
- Paid mandatory training that occur in off-site locations and outside of the regular work schedule.
- Must obtain Hepatitis B vaccine or formally decline vaccination. Vaccination record from previous employer is acceptable.
