Since our founding in 1825, B’nai Jeshurun (BJ) has been at the forefront of the American Jewish experience. Now approaching our third century, we are focused on the spiritual work of transformation and on the creation of a Jewish spiritual path that is authentic and profound and helps each member seek and live their purpose to the fullest.
Our spiritual leaders, and more than 1,700 member families, share a vision of a diverse, dynamic and welcoming community that offers many paths to Jewish religious life, while supporting one another in their spiritual quests. Our community is led by Senior Rabbi Roly Matalon, together with a senior leadership team that comprises Rabbi Felicia Sol, who oversees all programs, and Executive Director/COO Colin Weil, who oversees administration, advancement, and operations. Spiritual leadership also includes Hazzan Ari Priven and Rabbi Marcelo Bronstein (part-time). BJ has a staff of approximately 30 full-time and 10 part-time employees.
BJ is in the early stages of implementing a strategic plan that was completed in spring 2015, after more than a year of intensive work by members and our spiritual leaders and staff. The plan is built around four pillars: Strengthening Community Connections and Building a Shared Sense of Belonging; Prayer, Music, and Spiritual Practice; Responding to the Prophetic Vision through Social Justice and Hesed; and Engaging and Supporting 21st Century Jewish Families in their full diversity.
A new initiative, The Jewish Home Project (JHP), brings together existing and new resources and programs in support of an audacious vision for vibrant, 21st-century Jewish living for families and adults, including multifaith, chosen families, single parent, intrafaith, multirace, LGBTQ, and more. JHP functions within the BJ community and on its edges through resources, social and educational programming, community engagement, and robust marriage and conversion experiences, and is driven by a communication strategy that honors and exploits the multivocal tradition that is Judaism and that manifests in our community. JHP in a cross-departmental initiative engaging many BJ staff. The Program Coordinator for the Jewish Home Project will report to Rabbi Felicia Sol, and help to coordinate all Jewish Home Project programs from imagination to execution to follow-up and measurement.
The Program Coordinator must be open to having flexible hours and providing staff support on some evenings and weekends. The position is ideal for someone seeking work/life balance in a meaningful workplace, as the office has shortened Friday hours for Shabbat in addition to both secular and Jewish holiday closings.
- Serve as the primary point person for programs, communications, and research for JHP
- Assist the department with the execution of programs and development and deployment of program assessment and measurement
- Serve as interface between JHP program team, BJ community members, and others
- Use Salesforce to track program engagement
- Create and maintain email blasts, newsletter content, and other materials; manage calendars, spreadsheets, and project management timelines
- Work with Finance Department to process paperwork and ensure prompt payment of all service leaders, vendors, contractors, and other staff
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
- Minimum of three years of work experience, with at least one year of project coordination experience
- Advanced understanding of Microsoft Office and database management programs (Salesforce experience a plus)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; highly organized with superb attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and in a fast-paced environment while remaining flexible, resourceful, and efficient, with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality
- High emotional intelligence and maturity; willingness to listen effectively, seek, and receive feedback
- Self starter as JHP is new and will require someone who is creative and willing to initiate
- Sense of humor
- Knowledge of Jewish faith and/or culture a plus
