Summary

Reporting to the DYEP Program Coordinator (DYEP PC), the DYEP Program Associate is primarily responsible for providing information to detained minors about their rights in the U.S. Additionally, the DYEP Program Associate is responsible for better preparing detained minors for the immigration court process and assisting in acquiring pro bono legal representation.

The DYEP Program Associate regularly travels to local shelters to provide service to ImmDef clients.

Essential Functions

1. Traveling to approximately three shelters every week, the Program Associate conducts Know Your Rights (KYR) presentations and legal screenings with the purpose of determining relief qualification to detained youth

2. Initiate Representation with minors who are reunifying in our jurisdiction

3. Complete Court Prep presentations for minors the week they are due to be in court

4. Coordinate shelter visits for two of ImmDef’s four shelters

5. Schedule all DYEP Interpreters for minors who do not speak English or Spanish, logging all DYEP interpreter calls in the interpreter log

6. Maintain UCLS data for services rendered to each minor in the DYEP Program

7. Monitor VERA data for accuracy, correcting errors as they arise

8. Assist in training new DYEP staff as requested

Required Education and Experience

• Higher Education not required for this position

• Experience working with children

• Bilingual Spanish/English

• Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work under pressure

• Enthusiasm for working at a progressive, start-up organization

• Passion for social justice for immigrants required

• Strong organizational skills

• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with staff and underage clients

• Public speaking skills

 Ability to successfully communicate via email with shelter partners and perform Legal Screenings 

• Strong verbal communication skills

• Patience, flexibility and cultural competence a must

• Demonstrated proactive approaches to problem solving

• Highly resourceful team player, with the ability to also excel independently and efficiently manage time

• Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion, be adaptable to various competing demands, and demonstrate the highest level of constituent service and response

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

Preferred experience• Experience working with victims of trauma

Additional Eligibility Requirements • Ability to operate motor vehicle • Must possess personal vehicle, valid Driver’s License and current insurance

Supervisory Responsibility • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Classification and Work Schedule This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Work schedule will be Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with flexibility required based on the needs of the organization.

Work Environment and Physical Demands This job operates in a professional office environment. Additionally, DYEP Program Associates will be required to conduct shelter visits multiple times a week. Travel No overnight travel is expected for this position. There is, however, frequent local day travel to a variety of youth shelters.
