Gamelan Sekar Jaya (GSJ) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the study and presentation of Balinese performing arts. Our mission is to foster artistic exchange between Bali and the United States through residencies, workshops, performances, and the creation of innovative new works of music and dance; and to share the excitement of this exchange with diverse audiences in California, the US, and abroad. Through our shared commitment to the incredible artistic tradition of gamelan, GSJ has built a unique and thriving community that is both diverse and multi-generational. Our 60+ member company is currently celebrating its 45th year and has been lucky enough to host many of Bali’s most renowned artists.
GSJ has been called “the finest Balinese gamelan outside of Indonesia” by Indonesia’s Tempo Magazine, and has performed in venues ranging from San Francisco Symphony Hall to remote village squares in Bali. While we are widely known for our artistry as a performance group, our greatest pride is in the meaningful contributions we have made to a profound cultural exchange, one that has affected the lives of countless people both in the US and in Indonesia. As an organization, we are deeply committed to fostering a spirit of inclusivity that both attracts and celebrates the cultural diversity that makes our community so unique.
We are currently seeking an Interim Operations Manager to help guide GSJ through a period of leadership transition. Key responsibilities of this role include managing fundraising efforts, program development, public relations as well as management of projects and office staff. The position requires a unique ability to work both independently-- with limited paid staff-- and also collaboratively in an organization where both guest artists and members play integral roles in generating and implementing artistic vision. The ideal candidate will be passionate about the performing arts and will be curious, if not knowledgeable about Balinese music and dance. Above all, they will be a strong communicator who appreciates both the challenge and the value of managing multiple stakeholders in an organization that is powered largely by committed and passionate volunteers.
The initial target duration for the role is 6 months, with possibility of extension or conversion. This is a part-time (.75), hybrid position, based out of our “Banjar” (community center) in South Berkeley, CA. We offer a flexible, stimulating and supportive work environment. Performances and visits to rehearsals may necessitate some evening and weekend work.
