Position: National Director of Governance Programs

Position location: Flexible

Position Type: Full-time

Reports to: President

At New American Leaders (NAL) we envision an inclusive democracy where every person is represented. We believe our democracy is stronger when we engage immigrant communities at every level of the political process and we empower New Americans to run, win, and lead. The position of National Director of Governance Programs will contribute strategic insights and substantive input on programs in progress and develop new initiatives to support our network of elected officials across the country.

Job Description: National Director of Governance Programs

Through our nonprofit and political arms, New American Leaders and NAL Action Fund, our programs carry community leaders and activists throughout their political journey. From laying the groundwork with general campaign skills; to support and voter outreach on their behalf along the campaign trail; to advance governing skills once elected, we empower new Americans to lead with values and vision. The National Director of Governance Programs will draw upon their knowledge and experience with local and state governance to expand and strengthen program offerings in this latter area.

This position fills a critical role, supporting New American elected leaders who are committed to making policy change and leading in ways that center people over power. Additionally, our policy priorities are democratic reform and immigrant integration, and we are looking for ways to advance these core rights. There are some initiatives that we plan to carry through next year, but there is also space for new innovations and vision for what best will support New American legislators. This role will report to senior leadership and work closely with other directors across NAL programming.

The Director will be responsible for:

Program Development and Oversight

  • Overseeing the development, implementation and evaluation of key program initiatives that support the NAL elected network
  • Developing regular programs and events including our annual national conference, Power & Policy, and local leadership programs in NAL’s core states.
  • National elected official summit: Power & Policy
  • Regional convenings and elected official trips
  • Targeted elected official programming for time-sensitive, specific issues
  • Virtual small-group elected programming for first-time elected officials
  • Coaching and facilitating the policy development for a strategic cohort of elected officials committed to NAL’s values of authenticity, inclusivity and accountability, with a special focus on NAL’s core states.
  • Maintaining data tracking on policy work that supports the impact of NAL’s work in coordination with research, data and evaluation fellows.
  • Working collaboratively as part of the NAL programs team; coordinating across organization to ensure strong day-to-day operations of elected officials programming.

Relationship Building and External Affairs

  • Developing joint programming for NAL elected officials with local and national peer organizations committed to similar policy goals and other influencers in the fields of democracy rights, immigration integration, and progressive policy advocacy.
  • Facilitating the recruitment, selection and meetings of our Elected Advisory Council
  • Speaking at local and national events, conferences and political convenings where NAL elected officials and partner organizations are present.

Budget and Organizational Capacity

  • Contributing actively to build a team culture that espouses NAL’s values, which include accountability, inclusivity and authenticity.
  • Building out and adhering to budgets and timelines in accordance with organizational objectives.
  • Supporting fundraising efforts to advance programs.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Commitment to serving immigrant communities and building a multiracial democracy.
  • Minimum 3 years of legislative experience, in an elected or appointed position, or administration staff.
  • Expert interpersonal skills in dealing with elected officials, potential donors, and colleagues.
  • Ability to set and complete ambitious goals; skills needed to take programs from one stage of growth to the next.
  • Ability to adapt to quickly changing deadlines and priorities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to communicate to a wide range of audiences.
  • Ability to manage a budget.
  • Integrity, positive attitude, mission-oriented, and self-directed with demonstrated passion for NAL.
  • A team player, who can interrelate and operate effectively with peers and other associates within a collegial, yet demanding, work environment.
