2020–2021 Research Associate (Temporary) Presidential Support, at the National Endowment for Democracy (Job #20111)

Summary: The International Forum for Democratic Studies at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) seeks to hire a temporary full-time Research Associate who will provide support to NED’s president on a variety of tasks. This year-long prestigious position presents the opportunity to work directly with the founding President of NED and gain a unique view of the pivotal role that the Endowment has played in assisting and supporting the worldwide struggle for democracy.

About the Endowment: NED is a bipartisan, non-governmental grantmaking organization with a singular mission -- strengthening democracy in support of freedom around the world. NED makes more than 1,600 grants annually to support the projects of non-governmental organizations abroad that are working toward democratic goals in more than 90 countries. Created jointly by Republicans and Democrats, NED is governed by an independent board of directors. From its beginning, NED has remained steadfastly bipartisan. As authorized by The NED Act, the Endowment’s nongovernmental status, removed from the day-to-day of U.S. foreign policy priorities and diplomacy, allows it to work in some of the world’s most difficult environments in support of grassroots democratic actors.

Responsibilities:  The Research Associate (RA) is assigned to support the NED President with a variety of research, archival, and administrative tasks. Duties include:

  • Conducting research, collation, formatting, and proofing to aid in the preparation of documents, papers, and publications relating to the founding, history, accomplishments, and impacts of the Endowment.
  • Assisting with the organization, preservation, and preparation of—in close collaboration and with the expert guidance of the NED archivist in the Democracy Resource Center—materials of importance for archiving with the Library of Congress.
  • Providing administrative support on a wide range of tasks and projects, especially related to drafting a history of NED, from its origins and founding to its consolidation and growth, including an assessment of its role in the defense and promotion of democracy at time of rapid and often turbulent change.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in political science or a related field required; work towards a graduate degree preferred;
  • 0-2 years of relevant work experience;
  • Web and computer proficiency (especially Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook);
  • Authorized to work in the United States.

The successful applicant will (1) have a keen interest in democracy and human rights; the social sciences, or area studies; (2) possess excellent research, organizational, and administrative skills; and (3) demonstrate professionalism and strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work well in a team setting.

Duration:  RAs are expected to commit to working for the entire duration of the year (12-month period). RAs serve as temporary full-time (40 hours per week) employees, with benefits, for a 12-month period starting in November 2020 for this fellowship.

To Apply:  Candidates must include a cover letter, resume, desired salary, and contact information for three professional references. Your cover letter should address why you are interested in serving as a Research Associate at the International Forum for Democratic Studies on this particular assignment.
