Harlem School of the Arts seeks a passionate, experienced Junior Camp Counselor to supervise students at its Herb Alpert Center in Harlem. Formerly ARTScape, The Harlem Summer Arts Experience celebrates Harlem’s rich history and the interdisciplinary approach to learning by offering age appropriate activity sessions from all five disciplines, music, dance, theater, visual arts and musical theater. The 2021 Harlem Summer Arts Experience camp will run from July 6 through August 13, in two week sessions, with a staff training and orientation over the week of June 28 through July 2. Each session culminates with a video performance for campers’ families and friends. 


Junior Camp Counselors Job Summary: 

Junior Camp Counselors will report directly to the Senior Counselors and/or HSA staff to facilitate the daily flow of camp and is responsible for aiding in the supervision of all camp participants. Every counselor’s priority should be to offer a safe, creative, engaging place for children to immerse themselves in the arts. Therefore, they must be responsible, patient, dependable, mature, independent and able to act with integrity. The Camp Counselor will also be required to help with the “end of session” performances and serve as an aid to the Senior Counselors as needed. During class, Junior Camp Counselors will ensure students are on task and engaged with the class material and be able to appropriately enforce camp rules.

All members of the staff must commit to the full six weeks (3 two-week sessions) and a week of staff training that begins on Monday, June 28. Camp sessions run Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM beginning Tuesday, July 6 and ending Friday, August 13. Junior Counselors should expect to regularly attend and actively contribute during staff meetings and assist fellow staff in the daily work of the camp. Due to the nature of the work, we advise applicants against making any additional commitments outside of HSA for the duration of their time at camp. 

 

Regular staff member duties include but are not limited to:

  • Attending all trainings prior to the beginning of camp
  • Create a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment for children in an age-specific camp group (between 4 and 12 years old)
  • Assisting Teaching Artists with daily activities for the camp group, including art, group games, dancing, and projects inspired by the interests of the campers
  • Taking leadership for the camp group on trips to park and pool
  • Perform head-counts of participants throughout the day
  • Ensure participants are safe (properly hydrated, playing areas are free of hazards, etc.)
  • Working collaboratively with other counselors
  • Communicating with administrators on a daily basis; accepting feedback and analyzing camp-based challenges and successes
  • Upholding HSA’s progressive education and diversity initiatives in every camp activity.


The ideal candidate will be:

  • High School-aged with a background in education or the arts
  • At least one year experience in an educational or camp program
  • Able to generate and lead group activities for children between the ages of 4 and 12
  • Able to work collaboratively with other teachers and communicate effectively
  • Experienced in a creative discipline such as art, dance, theater or music is preferred
  • CPR and First Aid certification a plus


Qualifications: 

  • Summer Camp experience preferred
  • Cultural competency to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds  
  • Able to work in a team environment with minimal supervision  
  • Experience planning activities and content developmentally appropriate and aligned with HSA’s mission statement and artistic focus.
  • Ability to work independently, be flexible, and manage multiple priorities  
  • Check emails regularly and respond to communication efforts by supervisor in a timely manner
  • Work well in a team-oriented environment and maintain harmonious relationships  
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • English/Spanish bilingual a plus  
  • At least 16 years old  


LOCATION

Harlem School of the Arts is located at 645 St. Nicholas Avenue in Harlem. It is easily accessible via the A,C,B, and D subway trains. Teaching locations may be at Harlem School of the Arts or at other community and school locations in Upper Manhattan.
