ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION: We are a 501(c)(3) legal services organization, whose mission is to support low-wage workers as they pursue economic and social justice. We advance our mission through the provision of legal services, education, and advocacy. We have offices in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia and provide legal services throughout Pennsylvania. We focus the majority of our work on immigrant and migrant communities from Mexico and Central & South America.

JOB SUMMARY: We are seeking an experienced attorney to lead staff attorneys and paralegals in our Pittsburgh office.  This person will be responsible for overseeing all of the work of the Pittsburgh office, ensuring the provision of high-quality client-focused legal aid. The Supervising Attorney will be responsible for the direct supervision of the legal work of 5 staff attorneys, law student volunteers and interns, and the case-handling support staff. The Supervising Attorney is also responsible for ensuring compliance with contractual, statutory, ethical and regulatory requirements governing such legal work, with support and guidance from other members of the staff. The Supervising Attorney is a part of the management team and will work in collaboration with the rest of the team to implement agency-wide policies and procedures. In addition to overseeing attorneys and staff, supervising attorneys will represent clients and maintain a small caseload. The Supervising Attorney is also expected to play a leadership role in the organization’s efforts to be a partner in the statewide Pennsylvania Legal Services community.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR CONSIDERATION:

  • Juris Doctor Degree;
  • Pennsylvania Bar membership or Bar membership in another state and willingness to join the PA Bar if hired;
  • Excellent spoken and written Spanish language skills are required, other language skills are helpful and welcomed;
  • Prior supervisory experience required. We will prioritize applicants who have experience litigating employment-law cases, preferably in Pennsylvania, and/or handling immigration cases for low-wage workers;
  • Ability to lead and motivate;
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and willingness to drive;
  • Flexibility and sense of humor.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:


  • Provide meaningful supervision and support to staff attorneys, paralegal(s), law student volunteers and interns;
  • Monitor case progress for staff attorneys and provide feedback to staff attorneys;
  • Direct and monitor activities of volunteers, paralegal and law students;
  • Assist the Executive Director and Deputy Director in evaluating job performance of case handling staff and in designing training plans for staff.;
  • Maintain a caseload commensurate with abilities & caseload difficulty;
  • Ensure that staff comply with all applicable regulations, policies and grant requirements;
  • Support, promote and participate in community education and outreach to community groups and farm labor camps;
  • Draft content for funder reports as needed;
  • Develop and maintain good public relations with the client community, state and local bar and other community groups;
  • Ensure that all applicable client files, data and reports are accurate, complete, and timely;
  • Demonstrate knowledge and expertise of the relevant areas of law and the legal system; Maintain the highest ethical standards as a member of the State Bar and regularly seek out information relating to changes to the relevant areas of law;
  • Embrace and support our overall mission, policies and procedures, and confidentiality guidelines.


ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform other duties and projects as required, including some involvement in fundraising and the recruitment of legal fellows and interns.
