POSITION OVERVIEW – WHAT YOU’LL DO
Your job will be to provide both strategic and tactical communications expertise to extend the reach, influence, and impact of the de Beaumont Foundation and its programs. Reporting to the Vice President of Communications, you will work collaboratively with the communications team to plan and execute earned, digital, and social media; website content and management; writing and editing of issue papers, reports, blog posts, op-eds, press statements, and other materials; and more. You will be expected to remain up to date on evolving policies and practices in public health and use what you learn to recommend strategies and develop content to advance the goals and mission of the Foundation.
Your day-to-day work will include activities like:
- Strategic Communications Planning: Work with the VP of Communications to 1) help develop a strategic communications plan with audiences, goals, tactics, and metrics to enable the organization to build on its past progress and expand its reach and influence, and 2) take the lead in implementing that plan.
- Management: Manage two communications associates and work closely with program leads to coordinate communications projects across the organization. Manage contractors—such as graphic designers, web developers and other digital vendors, writers/editors, and communications agencies—to meet deadlines and ensure high quality in all the Foundation’s work. Manage internal and external relationships, including regular meetings and updates with internal staff and partner organizations.
- Project Management: Oversee communications activities across all de Beaumont projects and programs, which includes keeping projects on track (monitoring deadlines and deliverables); managing staff capacity and assigning work accordingly; managing budgets for both program-specific communications activities and the department budget; and helping the communications team set priorities.
- Writing and Content Development: Write, edit, and proofread print and digital content, including but not limited to reports and other publications, website content, social media posts, blog posts, issue briefs, program overviews, case studies, and media materials. You will also develop ideas for creative materials to support our mission and our programs, which may include infographics, video, web content/functionality, and more. Work with designers and other contractors to create content for print, web, and social media. Ensure compliance with the Foundation’s branding guidelines (logo, color, fonts, etc.).
- Digital Strategy and Execution: Working with the VP of Communications, you will lead content strategy and engagement for debeaumont.org, the Foundation’s social media channels, and partner websites. Develop and oversee an editorial calendar; post and update content on the website; and track and report on web and social analytics. Develop and implement strategies to expand the Foundation’s reach by expanding its social media following on all channels.
- Media Relations: Working with the VP of Communications, you will define goals and targets for proactive media outreach and procedures for reactive activities (such as responding to reporter inquiries, emerging issues, and public health trends). Cultivate relationships with reporters to help position de Beaumont as a go-to source on governmental public health. Facilitate and garner earned media, including developing targeted media lists, story angles, and supporting media materials. Draft and edit op-eds for placement in traditional and online outlets, as well as talking points, press statements, and other supporting documentation.
- Metrics: With the support of the communications team, you will track progress using media monitoring tools, Google Analytics, Hootsuite, and other systems.
WHO YOU ARE
The ideal candidate will have experience in a range of strategic communications—including digital strategy and execution, exceptional writing and editing skills, and media relations. He or she will have experience juggling multiple priorities, will take initiative, and thrive in a fast-paced environment. He or she will be able to think and work independently but collaborate well with others and recognize that sometimes work has to happen outside of routine business hours. The strongest candidate will also have knowledge and experience of health, public health, and marketing.

- Mission-driven: You want to make a difference and have experience leading advocacy-related, cause-driven communications.
- Hands-on: You are strategic and enjoy contributing ideas, but are also eager to execute. You can manage staff and contractors, but are also willing to write, post and schedule web and social media content, create media lists, create PPT slides, etc.
- Detail-oriented: You are enthusiastic about grammar and spelling and take pride in being the final set of eyes for reports, newsletters, digital content, and other communications.
- Ownership: You care deeply about doing what it takes to achieve results, and can manage your own projects (or pieces of larger ones). You drive work forward with a sense of urgency, anticipate problems, and course-correct when needed, with limited oversight. You care about results and know how to define and measure them.
- Initiative: You are eager to use your skills to advance the Foundation’s mission and look for ways to help beyond your own core responsibilities.
- Relationship management: You can effectively manage relationships with staff, vendors, and partners and cultivate new relationships.
- Discretion: You handle confidential information sensitively and use discretion about what information you share with members and partners.
- At least 10 years of experience in strategic communications, preferably including advocacy/nonprofit communications.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Ability to translate complex subject matter for a general audience (through words and visuals).
- Experience developing and implementing editorial plans, including web and social media content.
- Comfort and hands-on experience with digital systems and tools (such as web management, project management, social media planning, photo editing, metrics, and advertising). These systems and tools may include WordPress, Google Analytics, Constant Contact, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Google Adwords, SEO, social media advertising, etc.
- Experience managing live and digital events.
HOW TO APPLY
This position is full-time and based in downtown Bethesda, MD, just outside of Washington, D.C. Given the reality of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is an opportunity for telework until at least January 2022.
Limited travel is required and is typically known well in advance.
We offer a competitive salary, excellent benefits, and a collegial work environment. The salary range for this position is $112,000 to $125,000, commensurate with experience.
