The Community Food Coordinator provides practical, hands-on, and creative food & nutrition, and gardening education to youth and adults in Trenton, NJ.  

Roles and Responsibilities:

Food and Nutrition Education

·        Conduct cooking workshops and tastings in the classroom and in the community setting

·        Promote increased food literacy and access to healthy food through involvement in community coalitions that advance common health improvement goals, including promotion and implementation of the Trenton School District Wellness Policy

·        Work with Trenton School District food service provider(s) to scale successful classroom tastings into school and/or district-wide tastings and regular meal offerings when feasible

·        Serve as Service Site Supervisor for FoodCorps service members and primary liaison with FoodCorps 

Gardening Education

·        Help schools to create and manage school gardens by coordinating with Urban Agriculture staff

·        Create effective ways to communicate with members of the school garden team(s)

·        Leverage volunteer support to further service goals and meet school need(s); manage volunteers and coordinate garden volunteer days

·        Support gardening and environmental education efforts through planning, promotion, and implementation of workshops for schools, families, and the general public

Teacher Training, Support, and Networking

·        Develop and conduct teacher training workshops so school garden teams can operate gardens with as much self-sufficiency as possible

·        Develop lesson plans and adapt existing resources as needed to align content with state and national Core Curriculum Standards and then implement directly and/or share with teachers

·        Provide means for school garden team members to connect with others in the district and larger school garden community: may include web-based platforms including social media or online groups 

Qualifications:                

  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university and at least two years related experience and/or training; or at least five years related experience
  • Spanish language proficiency highly desired
  • Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy
  • Ability to maintain criminal history background clearance and fingerprint clearance throughout the duration of employment
  • Experience with cooking, nutrition, food preparation, and recipe/menu development
  • Experience with gardening, farming, and/or horticulture
  • Community education experience
  • Experience working with youth
  • Cultural competency in working with people of diverse backgrounds
  • Comfortable working in an urban setting
  • Passion for the environment and healthy living
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Proficiency in documenting and promoting work using photography, writing, and social media.
  • Valid NJ Driver’s License in good standing with insurable driving record. A personal vehicle should be accessible, as use of a company vehicle is not always possible. Work-related mileage and travel costs can be reimbursed.

USD 40,000 - USD 42,000
