Job Description Summary

The Advancement team cultivates, solicits, and stewards individuals, as well as foundation, government and corporate partners who invest in the Society to drive impact through science, technology, education, exploration, and storytelling. The team collaborates with Society teams – and often works closely with National Geographic Partners/Disney – to build transformative and impact-driven strategic partnerships. The team also produces global events that deepen connections and leverage the Society’s power to convene, and directs robust annual, major, and planned giving programs that empower the Society with a broad base of public support.

The National Geographic Society Foundations and Government Relations team within Advancement is looking for a collaborative and adaptable team member with a passion for cultivating and managing strategic partnerships. This team is small, so this role will play an active role to engage and secure strategic partnerships that are transformational, not transactional, and help with the project management of existing accounts.

Your Impact

Responsibilities Include:

Account Management and Grant Writing (50%)

  • Collaborate with NGS program teams and the Advancement team to conceptualize, write, and finalize foundation proposals and reports.
  • Cultivate and personally manage a small portfolio of active and prospective private foundations. Engagement will include: phone/video conversations, written communications, including letters of inquiry, proposals, reports, and informal updates (created in collaboration with program staff).
  • Work closely with the Director, Strategic Philanthropic Partnerships and the Foundations team to ensure the timely and successful execution of contract deliverables cited and promised in contractual agreements.
  • Serve as a point of contact for key stakeholders, liaising with other departments to ensure account fulfillment, and supporting external facing communication to keep donors apprised of partnership updates and progress.
  • Assist with qualitative and quantitative impact measurement and stewardship reports, program updates, etc.
  • Liaise with the Advancement team communications lead to help craft cultivation and stewardship communications pieces.

Team Coordination (30%)

  • Use Salesforce CRM and Google Sheets tool to capture, track and manage pipeline and communication for the team. 
  • Proactively run team meetings, helping us use our time together effectively.
  • Assist with the scheduling of various donor and internal meetings.

Prospect Research and Lead Generation (20%)

  • Work closely with the Prospect Research Officer to generate new foundation leads.
  • Think creatively to recommend events, conferences, and other strategies for getting quality leads and engagements.

What You’ll Bring

We are looking for a self-starter who is eager to learn and be a part of a dynamic team. Working closely within the small Foundations and Government Relations team, this person will have many opportunities to collaborate across NGS teams, take the lead on certain projects, and grow within the role.

Necessary Knowledge and Skills

  • Excellent interpersonal and written communications skills.
  • Proven work experience in a fundraising, partnership management, or sales role. 
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple projects and consistently deliver high quality work in a fast-paced environment with positive attitude and grace under pressure.
  • Attention to detail with a proactive, creative, and entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Collaborative team player with diplomatic temperament and donor-oriented approach.
  • Comfort engaging with staff at varying levels of leadership.

Desired Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with Raiser’s Edge CRM system

Educational Background

Bachelor’s degree preferred
