Director of IA&A at Hillyer (Art Gallery)

The Director of IA&A at Hillyer will be responsible for re-opening and re-establishing IA&A’s contemporary and international art space, managing its budget and daily operations and its related programs and initiatives. The Director ensures all aspects of Hillyer’s operations align with IA&A’s mission of promoting cross-cultural understanding and exposure to the arts internationally. The Director also ensures Hillyer continues to be recognized as a leader in the Washington, DC, arts community and beyond for the quality of its exhibitions, public programs, and commitment to artists and the diverse audiences it serves. 

Duties and responsibilities

  • Re-opens IA&A at Hillyer, which has been closed for 18 months, and does everything necessary to re-develop Hillyer as a continuing vibrant, sustainable arts center.
  • Identifies grant and other revenue generating opportunities and works collaboratively with others to secure contributed and in-kind support for Hillyer
  • Hires and supervises Hillyer’s staff and interns to ensure gallery exhibition presentation, coverage, marketing and social media, website, programming, membership, attendance, and event rental requirements are met
  • Develop Advisory and Support Committees and appropriate networks to aid in artist, exhibition, and program selection and to ensure those align with IA&A’s objectives
  • Oversees installation of gallery exhibitions in a timely and professional manner
  • Develops and maintains relationships with artists, embassies, arts organizations, cultural institutions, and other key stakeholders
  • Develops, tracks, and attains Hillyer’s annual budget
  • Other duties as assigned

 Qualifications

·        Proven entrepreneurial skills and success.

·        BA in Art History, Arts Management, Fine/Studio Arts, or related content area with a minimum of 3 years of experience managing a contemporary arts space, an art gallery, or some other visual arts enterprise

·        Comprehensive understanding, knowledge and experience working with contemporary art and artists including development of complimentary public programming

·        Hands-on experience installing fine art exhibitions of varying size, scope and media

·        Knowledge of best practices for installing, de-installing, handling, preparing, and shipping fine art

·        Budget management, grant writing and proven fundraising experience

·        Experience with marketing and social media to engage both traditional and virtual audiences

·        Supervisory experience and a demonstrated ability to build and retain a professional, cooperative and enthusiastic team

·        Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines and supervise team deliverables

·        Ability to work evenings and weekends

·        Knowledge of the DC arts community and/or ties to international arts communities a plus

Physical requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to, stand, sit, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone keyboard. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision requirements due to computer work. Physical ability to hold, move, and install artworks of varying size, scope and media. Ability to move and/or lift 10-20 pounds occasionally and 10 pounds frequently with a good deal of walking or standing.

Candidate will be required to work primarily onsite at IA&A’s gallery in downtown Washington DC.

USD 54,000 - USD 54,000Salary offered for this position is $54,000 /year dependent upon meeting all qualifications.
