POSITION DESCRIPTION: Director of Development



Category: Sr. Administration, Board Participation

Status: Full-time; Salaried; Exempt

Potential Travel: Frequent local travel (3-5 days/week); Occasional regional travel (3-5 days/month)

Physical Demands: Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk, table, or other work surface; Frequent need to ascend and descend staircases; Frequent periods of extended exposure to computer screens/monitors; Frequent use of typing keyboard and manual writing; Infrequent need to lift, carry, pull, or push items weighing more than 15 pounds

Working Environment: School setting, with presence of children and adults; Office environment, including desk and standard office furniture and technology; Natural & fluorescent light; Heating & air conditioning

Typical Schedule: Standard business hours; Regular work requirements outside of standard business hours, including early mornings, nights, and weekends; Work from home opportunities with supervisor approval; Compensatory time in the event of significant periods of event planning and execution

Direct Reports: Contracted Grant Writer


Overview

The Director of Development shall oversee all aspects of the organization's fundraising, public relations, and communications initiatives for the purpose of ensuring adequate operational resources and awareness and productive relationships within the community. S/he will effectively communicate the school’s mission to a wide and diverse range of stakeholders. S/he, in coordination with the Executive Director, provides strategy and guidance related to the school's resource acquisition and management; coordinates with other administrators in the faithful use and accurate reporting of gifts received; and promotes the school through effective communication and public relations.

Duties & Responsibilities

Mission Awareness

  • Articulate clearly the mission and goals of Children’s Community School to a wide range of constituencies in the interest of increasing financial and overall support for the organization
  • Work collaboratively with the Executive Director to identify needs for funding 
  • Assist in the cultivation of supportive community relationships for the Executive Director and Board of Directors
  • Create and disseminate press releases and other materials to promote the school with local and regional media outlets
  • Oversee the organization's use of the school website and social media for effective communication and public relations
  • Produce and publish various print and digital materials to communicate the school's mission, specific events, and the fiduciary standing of the organization
  • Coordinate large-scale efforts to enlist volunteers for fundraising events and other institutional purposes 

Administrative 

  • Manage database of all activities related to fundraising
  • Oversee and facilitate all aspects of gift acknowledgement
  • Provide monthly written reports to the Board of Directors regarding matters pertinent to the school's fundraising programs
  • Coordinate and complete all reporting as specified and outlined by funding sources, and as required by all applicable laws and best practices

Financial Management 

  • Coordinate, manage, and implement financial resource development programs, including, but not limited to, foundation, corporate, and government grants, as well as individual giving and the endowment fund
  • Provide research support and analysis to the Board and Executive Director in matters of individual giving and solicitation of gifts
  • Oversee and implement all aspects of thrice annual funding appeals
  • Liaise with the Board Fund Development Committee on all aspects of fundraising events
  • Collaborate with the Finance Committee and Business Manager to prepare the annual fundraising plan, budget, audit, and other required financial documentation 

Human Resources 

  • Contribute to the annual performance evaluation of the Executive Assistant and write and submit an annual performance review for the Contracted Grant Writer

Other

  • Complete other tasks and duties as assigned by the Executive Director


Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's Degree preferred
  • 6-10 years of progressing responsibility in nonprofit fundraising, including individual giving, grants, and other philanthropic sources
  • Evidence of successfully meeting fundraising objectives and revenue goals
  • Experience managing and leveraging multiple communication platforms
  • Strong local and regional network, and the ability to further build the network of prospective donors and  school supporters
  • Superior verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
