Manager Childrens Centers - Criminal Court, Brooklyn

Summary:

Safe Horizon’s Court-Based Children’s Centers provide structured, educational, day care support to children of adults involved in court proceedings.  The ages of the children range from six weeks to 12 years of age.  Center staff facilitate supportive, educational activities with the children in their care. 

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Under the supervision of the Children’s Center Director, ensure the Centers' compliance with funder regulations;
  • Learn and integrate a trauma-informed, client-centered approach, using an anti-oppressive lens, into your work with clients.
  • Provide regular supervision to a team of Head Teachers, Teachers, and support to student interns, foster grandparents, and volunteers
  • Observe staff interactions with children and caregivers and provide feedback;
  • Assist the Director in the hiring and training of new staff;
  • Assist in the Centers’ program planning and curriculum development;
  • Ensure funder forms, federal food program meal plans, registration forms, statistics, and other required forms are filled out accurately, thoroughly, and submitted on a timely basis;
  • Perform the responsibilities of the Head Teachers while providing “floater” coverage to the six Centers, citywide, as needed;
  • Provide oversight to ensure appropriate care and safety of children in the Center;
  • Work with children from infancy to 12 years of age in a supportive, developmentally appropriate, literacy-rich environment that serves children in a court setting;
  • Work closely with Safe Horizon Site Directors to ensure the needs of Children Centers are met and immediate issues that arise are addressed;
  • Host and participate in quarterly advisory committee meetings;
  • Attend any trainings that may be required by Safe Horizon and the OCA Statewide Children’s Center’s Program; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Supervisory Reports:        Approximately five staff (Head Teachers and Teachers)

                                   

Interacts with:

Head Teachers, Site Directors, Associate Vice Presidents, court personnel, court-appointed nursery attendants, foster grandparents, volunteers, student interns, support staff, ACS workers, monitors from regulatory and supervisory agencies such as OCA Children’s Center Program Office, DOHMH, Department for the Aging, and other agencies as appropriate.

 

Knowledge and Skills:

 

Required:

  • Understanding of basics of child development for all levels from birth to age 12;
  • Understanding of curriculum development (lesson plans) for multi-age groups;
  • Understanding of several methods of kind behavioral guidance and the ability to apply the appropriate method to the situation at hand;
  • Ability to relate to caregivers and children who are under stress;
  • Ability to work with difficult population which requires a high level of social skills, maturity, and confidence in addition to being nurturing and flexible, yet firm and in charge;
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and the Internet;
  • Strong interpersonal relationship and crisis management skills;
  • A sound knowledge of victimization issues; and
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.

 

Education:

  • BA in early childhood education or related field, enrolled in a BA program, or equivalent experience   

 

Experience:

 

Required:

  • Supervisory experience;
  • 2 years experience working with children in some capacity;
  • Must meet all licensing and screening requirements, including but not limited to:
  • Fingerprinting
  • Registration with the State Central Registry of Child Abuse and Maltreatment
  • Pass a pre-employment physical granting medical permission to work with small children, which includes proof of immunizations that he/she is free from communicable diseases
  • Pass an annual physical

 

Desirable:

  • Prior teaching experience on preschool level preferred; 
  • At least two full years as a classroom teacher; and
  • Training for CPR and First Aid, Mandated Reporter training, DOHMH requirements and regulations, working with Special Education youth, and children who were witnesses to violence and/or abuse.

 

Hours:  Full-time, Monday – Friday, 9am-5pm
