The Development Manager oversees and supports communication and solicitation with individual and institutional donors including foundation, corporate and government sources in Southern California. In partnership with the Development Director, the Development Manager is responsible to meet the annual fundraising goal for Southern California. The Development Manager is externally-facing and works with annual donors, development writers, and a Young Professionals Board. The writing component is a secondary, but critical part of the Development Manager’s responsibilities.
The individual in this role reports to the Director of Development based in San Francisco, CA.
Foundation, Corporation, and Government Outreach
• Conduct on- and off-line research to identify foundation, corporate, and government funding prospects – including family foundations, corporate and government grants, and sources of event sponsorship
• Work with network development writers to conceptualize, develop, and implement letters of inquiry, proposals, and sponsorship requests
• Ensure that funding requests for renewal grants are created and sent according to schedule
• Maintain annual calendar to track deadlines and submissions of proposals and reports
• Process donations and acknowledgement letters and ensure Salesforce is updated with relevant notes
• Draft additional funder correspondence including scheduling site visits, providing follow up information, and progress reports as necessary
• Devise customized fundraising budgets for proposal and report submissions with support from program and finance teams including projected revenues and expenses and actual expense reports
• Attend meetings with foundation/corporate staff to discuss program/project goals; prepare presentation materials as needed; and take foundation program officers on site visits
• Liaise with program staff to be current on program details to share with funders
• Assist marketing and communications team with language for social media, annual report and blog posts
Individual Donor Outreach
• Work in partnership with the Development Director in prospecting potential donors and stewarding existing donors
• Provide support to the Young Professionals Board with events and outreach as needed
• Work with local advisory board and Director of Development to lead, execute and run the Fall fundraising event
• Work with the Young Professional’s Board to plan and execute networking and fundraising events
• Support the management of regional advisory board; prepare presentation materials as needed (particularly around institutional donor information)
• As requested, ghostwrite correspondence for members of the leadership and executive teams as a prelude to meetings with high-level prospects, donors, and influential individuals, and as follow-up from such meetings and phone calls
• Supervise development interns as needed
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant professional experience
• 3-5 years of successful experience in front-line fund-raising and/or grant-writing, with a history of meeting annual fundraising goals
• Ability to write in a creative and compelling manner with an unrelenting attention to detail
• Strong project management skills, including the ability to balance multiple projects, while performing at a high level in a demanding and fast-paced environment
• Excellent relationship building skills; ability to personally connect with and engage diverse groups of internal and external stakeholders
• Comfort level with establishing and stewarding relationships, both in-person and over the phone
• Solid level of proficiency with internet search engines, MS Word and Excel
• Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills
• Flexible work approach and the ability to act with sensitivity and discretion while handling confidential information
• Ability to work independently and as a self-starter
• Ability and willingness to travel to meetings/assigned locations to meet with donors or potential donors
• Experience and comfort working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and communities
• Commitment to Jumpstart’s mission and values of joy, learning, connection, determination and kindness
Preferred or Ideal
• Thorough understanding of organizational and project budgeting protocols
• Ability to use donor database software (such as Salesforce) and data retrieval services
• Prior experience/interest in social justice or diversity, equity, and inclusion work
Approximately 10 – 15% local travel
