Description

Founded in 1989, Western Resource Advocates (WRA) is dedicated to protecting the West’s land, air, and water to ensure that vibrant communities exist in balance with nature. We use law, science, and economics to craft innovative solutions to the most pressing conservation issues in the region within three core program areas: Clean Energy, Healthy Rivers and Western Lands.

In the face of population growth and climate change, the Western United States needs a strong and effective advocacy voice at the regional level to address changes that are already underway and to steer the West towards a sustainable future. WRA has aggressive plans to tackle these challenges. We envision a future in the West where:

·        Western rivers and lakes will have abundant clean water to support habitat for fish and wildlife, communities and agriculture, and world class recreational opportunities. The Colorado River will flow to the sea;

·        Our homes, buildings and transportation systems will be powered by clean energy. The West will prosper in a zero-carbon economy;

·        Half of western landscapes and habitat will be protected and connected to support thriving wildlife populations and unparalleled opportunities to enjoy the West’s natural beauty; and

·        The West will have clean air and clean water to support healthy communities and vital habitat.

WRA’s Clean Energy Program works to reduce the environmental impacts of electricity production in the region by fostering a transition away from fossil-fueled resources towards renewable energy, energy efficiency, and other clean energy technologies, with a primary focus is on reducing the power sector’s contribution to climate change.

Position Summary

WRA’s Clean Energy Program is taking decisive action to achieve the large-scale carbon emission reductions that scientists say are needed to address the ongoing effects of climate change. Strong, accurate, nimble communication will be critical to our success. WRA must build support for this important work by articulating the case for investing in clean energy. This is challenging: the regulatory process is complicated, and information must be accurately and clearly explained for a variety of audiences, including customers, utilities, regulatory agencies, and state lawmakers – and of course, the mainstream media and the trade press.

To help advance this work, WRA is seeking a skilled communications professional to assist the Clean Energy Program in communicating about WRA's work to advance renewable energy and electric vehicles throughout the West. This person will be a member of the Communications and Marketing Team and embedded within WRA’s Clean Energy Program and will be responsible for crafting compelling messages, including (but not limited to) press releases, op-eds, and website materials, each designed to build the case for our work on clean energy. They will also be the point person for media outreach to the mainstream press and trade publications. Finally, they will closely monitor the news coverage by local, national, trade and mainstream outlets, keeping the team abreast of developments related to our objectives and being ready to respond quickly with key information and compelling quotes that will help direct coverage.

Location

The position may be located in any of WRA’s offices in Boulder, Carson City, Denver, Salt Lake City, or Santa Fe; or remotely in Phoenix.

Job Responsibilities

·        Collaborate to produce compelling print, online, and video collateral related to WRA’s clean energy work.

·        Assist in writing and editing reports and related material for all audiences.

·        Write and edit news releases, news advisories, op-eds, and other materials for the media about WRA’s clean energy work.

·        Serve as WRA’s point person for reporters and editors from energy trade publications. In collaboration with WRA’s Communications Team, build relationships with reporters and editors at mainstream newspapers, magazines, online publications, and other media outlets working on energy issues.

·        Occasionally assist WRA’s president or other staff members with speeches or talking points about WRA’s clean energy work.

Qualifications

·        At least 5 years of experience writing for trade and mainstream media outlets, preferably about energy issues.

·        Highly skilled and experienced editor capable of breaking down complex subjects into simple terms that are understandable and compelling to the general public.

·        Speechwriting experience desired but not required.

·        Experience producing compelling communications products and collateral, including press releases and web content.

·        Strong organizational skills, with attention to detail and follow‐through.

·        Intellectual curiosity and an ability to quickly grasp complex subjects.

·        Willingness to travel 10% of time.

·        A genuine passion for WRA and its mission.
