Founded in 1974, Illinois Humanities is a non-profit, state council of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Our mission is to strengthen the social, political, and economic fabric of Illinois through constructive conversation and community engagement. We set out to accomplish this mission through grantmaking, humanities-based educational programs, and public programming and exhibitions in the areas of public policy, arts, media & journalism, and the economy. 

In this full-time position for the Loop Office, the Advancement Manager assists in the planning, management, and execution of Illinois Humanities’ fundraising efforts—including research, cultivation, and stewardship—in the areas of: foundation, corporate, and government support; individual giving; and event-based fundraising.

The Manager’s primary responsibility is in leading and managing the grants and sponsorships program and they are responsible for coordinating solicitation strategies for foundations, corporations, and other funding agencies. The Manager works closely with the program, communications, and advancement teams to identify, research, cultivate, and solicit potential funders. They are responsible for the foundation/corporate fundraising calendar, moves management, and grant compliance. Additionally, the Advancement Manager will support the Director of Advancement in soliciting sponsorships for the annual Public Humanities Award Luncheon and in growing Illinois Humanities’ individual giving program, especially in helping to develop moves management systems, stewardship plans, and gift proposals.

  • Excellence in Foundation Source (or other foundation research software)
  • MS Office Suite
  • Experience with Constituent Relationship Management databases, preferably the Raiser’s Edge 
  • Familiarity with finding and analyzing data
  • Experience with, and preference for, working in a growing team
  • Excellent verbal communications skills and interpersonal skills
  • Great time-management and organization skills, attention to detail
  • Ability to work in and with diverse communities and organizations (socio-economic, racial, ethnic, ideological, etc.) and ability to interact with highly accomplished people.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team
  • A proven record of continuing education in the philanthropic sector
  • A positive manner in dealing with people, ability to work collegially with fellow staff and to establish service-oriented, helpful relationships with community groups and other partners

Work Experience

  • Five years’ fundraising experience with a majority of it in grantseeking
  • Additional individual giving/events fundraising experience preferred
  • Proven ability to manage a minimum portfolio of 30 annual funders  
  • Proven ability to successfully solicit grants of $50,000 and above
  • Familiarity with individuals in Chicago’s philanthropic community
  • Familiarity with arts and culture funders preferred
  • Previous experience supporting a Board of Directors as fundraisers and working with volunteers preferred

Compensation:

  • Salary range from $45,000 to $56,000

Work Environment:

  • Main office in Chicago’s Loop is fully accessible. Work at off-site locations is required and those may not necessarily be fully accessible
  • Evening and weekend work is required and a flexible work week is allowed 
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and scanners. Employee is regularly required to communicate effectively via computer and phone
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds
