Description

The Westside Justice Center (WJC) is a community-centered organization that promotes a holistic approach to justice by: 1) Facilitating legal literacy to reduce recidivism; 2) Providing legal and quasi- legal assistance to individuals; and 3) Establishing and nurturing community trust through restorative justice practices. WJC provides legal and quasi legal assistance on individual and community bases, and utilize the data collected through our intake work to prioritize legal, social and issues of justice to address on a policy level. 


Community Advocates Project (CAP):

To further this mission, the Westside Justice Center (WJC) is partnering with Communities on Chicago’s West Side, to train community members to empower individuals and communities to seek accountability and greater access to the justice system. As advocacy-informed members of their community, Community Advocates will support and empower individuals and communities to access, attain, understand and act on their rights, through education, support, step-down trainings and dissemination of Information about how to access rights. 


Living and working in their communities, Community Advocates combine formal and informal skills and tools to navigate the justice system, mediate disputes, and assist marginalized community members in addressing core legal and social conflicts. Community advocates steward resources and support individuals in accessing legal services in a timely manner and with the information needed. 


Responsibilities:

The VISTA Attorney would serve as the Community Advocates Project Supervising Attorney. Main activities include:

Training:

  • Develop curriculum for Community Advocates training;
  • Community Advocates supervision, support and development:
  • Develop a system to assign, track and manage community advocates services;
  • Develop Community Advocates manual and procedural guide;
  • Develop a mechanism to review cases and provide ongoing assistance to Community Advocates;
  • Develop reference materials for legal and quasi-legal issues identified by WJC community and staff members.

Program Evaluation:

  • Develop a mechanism for performance evaluation;
  • Develop a framework for program evaluation and measurables.

Community Engagement:

  • Develop and cultivate platforms for community engagement and oversight for the community advocates project.
