Mobilization for Justice (formerly MFY Legal Services), a non-profit legal services organization that provides a wide range of free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers, is seeking a supervising attorney to join a team of lawyers and paralegals that serves the legal needs of people with mental health disabilities, with the goal of preserving housing and ensuring that people receive the benefits to which they are entitled. The team represents people in various courts; works collectively with advocacy groups; and conducts trainings for the courts, hospitals, and community groups.

MFJ’s mission is to achieve social justice, prioritizing the needs of people who are low-income, disenfranchised or have disabilities. We do this by providing the highest quality direct civil legal assistance, conducting community education, building partnerships, engaging in policy advocacy, and bringing impact litigation. MFJ is a 120+ person staff comprised of attorneys, paralegals, social workers, and support staff. It is a diverse, unionized, and collegial workplace where staff share the organization’s mission to achieve social justice.

Responsibilities:  

• Supervise attorneys and paralegals who handle a range of civil legal problems, including those related to housing and government benefits.

• Work closely with community and hospital-based mental health providers, including those with whom MFJ has a medical-legal partnership. 

• Manage and report on government contracts and other grants.  

• Carry own docket of cases, where appropriate. 

• Work with management team to address general office needs and administrative tasks.

• Addressing systemic problems through policy, advocacy and/or impact litigation is supported but not required.

Requirements:  

• Litigation experience in state and/or federal court; experience with appellate advocacy a plus.

• Knowledge of housing law and/or government benefits.  

• Excellent research, writing, and editing skills.  

• Leadership, team-building, and mentoring skills.  

• Highly organized with excellent time management skills.  

• Prior supervisory experience a plus.

• Spanish language skills a plus.

Salary: Commensurate with experience, with excellent fringe benefits.
