The Story and Talent Curator (STC) is the point of connection between a broad network of mission-focused talent and NPR, stations, and other producing entities seeking contributors and story pitches.
AIR’s network numbers nearly 1,300 producers working across 46 states and 30 countries. The STC will work with editors and commissioning agents to build a rich pool of mission-focused contributors to advance AIR and NPR’s shared objective to build a culture of sophisticated inclusivity through public media. The STC is ideally able to work out of AIR’s HQ in Dorchester, Mass.
The outcomes of the work of the STC will be:
- A strong, richly diverse base of mission-focused talent who enrich reporting on NPR broadcast and digital platforms, as well as those of the wider public media network of stations and distributors.
- A vibrant pipeline for talent from recruitment, to cultivation, to assignment phase.
- Finding “diamonds in the rough” and working to carry them — as appropriate — from rough idea stage to matching with the right editor;
- Attending orientation meetings at NPR and others on an as-needed basis to build relationships with editors, become familiar with needs, and establish a strong pipeline;
- Attending conferences and gatherings to identify and recruit talent;
- Working closely with AIR staff, NPR, and bureau chiefs to devise/coordinate new strategies for recruiting/cultivating talent; communicating out details about resources, opportunities, as well as “profiles” of both editors and contributors;
- Interfacing regularly with producers through e-mail or by phone to field questions and provide resources;
- Developing a plan to target/cultivate different talent cohorts to tap as new contributors;
- Interacting with producers via the social web, on the AIRDaily forum, producer Listservs, and other relevant channels to foster conversation and signal opportunity;
- Producing a quarterly report, submitting to AIR and to NPR;
- Travel (estimated at 20 percent)
- Demonstrated proficiency producing high-caliber reporting, story editing, or documentary production;
- Ability to hone a pitch and understand the general landscape of opportunities for podcasts, shows, web platforms, recurring series, etc.;
- Experience and passion for mission-driven journalism;
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent);
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills;
- Deadline-driven, top-notch multitasker;
- Cultural competence, emotional maturity, compassionate, strong listening skills, and ability to work successfully with diverse groups;
- Experience as a trainer or teacher a plus.
