The Opportunity.

If so, we want you to join our dedicated and lively team of interpreters! Our interpreters bring the stories of our special places to life for our visitors in meaningful, fun, and relevant ways. We believe that by engaging and exciting our visitors they will feel more connected to our cultural heritage and be inspired to help preserve and protect it for future generations. Currently we are looking for First-Person Interpreters and Landscape Interpreters for Castle Hill on the Crane Estate in Ipswich.

 

In This Role You Will:

  • Lead and facilitate up to five interactive tour experiences and participatory activities on site for visitors of all ages
  • Welcome and orient visitors, acting as an ambassador for the site and The Trustees 
  • Encourage membership sales by being well-versed in the various levels and benefits 
  • Drive a 7-passenger golf cart around the estate grounds (Landscape Interpreter only) 
  • Open and close the Great House and any additional outbuildings for daily tours 
  • Attend a series of trainings and regular team meetings to learn about the interpretive philosophy and techniques used at the site 
  • Participate in training, guided research and ongoing study about the history and cultural context of the site as well as the Trustees 
  • Participate in ongoing peer and supervisor evaluations 
  • Follow best practices in collections management, security, and care 
  • Other duties as assigned

Level of Language Proficiency

Education and Experience:         

  • Have a proven background in teaching, museums, customer service, and/or theater
  • Preferably possess a degree in history, theatre arts, education, museum studies, or a related field

 

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Friendly, active listeners with excellent conversational and public speaking skills 
  • Enjoy engaging visitors through multi-sensory interpretive techniques including storytelling, hands-on activities, and interactive discussion 
  • Willing to take on costumed, first-person characters for many visitor experiences 
  • Intellectually curious and open to learning and sharing new things 
  • Professional and team-oriented 
  • Respectful of all visitors and able to provide exceptional customer service 
  • Flexible and willing to meet the needs and interests of visitors 
  • Self-reflective and eager to continuously improve their skills 
  • Able to climb stairs and stand for periods of 2 hours or more at a time 
  • Reliable and committed to their position, their site team, and the mission of the Trustees  

 

Other:                                       

  • Expect to work 2-3 days a week including some weekend days. Castle Hill is open to the public for tours on weekends May-June and November-December, and six days a week late June – October. 
  • Reports to the Castle Hill Cultural Site Administrator.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Able to climb stairs and stand for periods of time
  • Comfortable with variable outdoor weather conditions
